If This Bill Passes the Governor Will Get to Choose the Next PA Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth Court Judges!!

Details

Next week you get to vote on PA Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth Court judges, but if HB 111 passes it will be the last time you get that chance.   HB 111 is a constitutional amendment that would change the way judges on the three statewide courts — Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth — are selected.   In essence, the governor would choose the nominee from a short list provided him by a 13-member bipartisan citizens’ nominating commission of lawyers and non-lawyers selected by elected officials.   The nominee would then be voted on by the Senate, with  only a simple majority being necessary for confirmation.

The process is similar to the one for US Supreme Court, US Court of Appeals, federal judges, etc..  One major difference is the US Constitution requires two-thirds of the US Senate vote ‘yea’ in order to confirm a nominee.
