Issue

Thank These Two Congressmen and Ask Senators to Support Total Repeal of Obamacare

Details

1.)  As reported in last week’s e-newsletter, only two PA Congressmen signed the letter to Attorney General  Jeff Sessions  concerning religious liberty and specifically the remarks made by Senator Bernie Sanders during a Senate Budget Committee confirmation hearing for President Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought.   Sanders’ remarks indicated he would use a religious test in making his decision in voting ‘yea’ or ‘nay’ Vought’s confirmation.  The letter asked for Attorney General Sessions to reaffirm the constitutional protection against religious tests for public office as per Article VI of the US Constitution.  Those two PA signers were Congressmen Mike Kelly and Keith Rothfus.

2.)  The Senate has failed to vote on a bill to repeal/replace Obamacare.  Just as a reminder:  nowhere in the US Constitution is Congress even given the power to be involved in healthcare!  The bill that had been scheduled for a vote earlier this week has been pulled for lack of the needed votes.   That bill was not a full repeal, but just tweaked portions of Obamacare.  Now Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the Senate will vote on the Obamacare Repeal Reconciliation Act early next week — probably Tuesday.  It would repeal several key pillars of Obamacare and eliminate for one year more than $390 million (over 86 percent) of over $450 million in annual federal funding to Planned Parenthood. The bill would also repeal Obamacare’s premium tax credits that currently provide over $8.7 billion in annual subsidies for nearly 1,000 health care plans that cover elective abortion.  It is not a full repeal, but is a starting point.  Republicans seemed to have forgotten that for seven years they campaigned on the full repeal of Obamacare!

According to Senator Rand Paul, it also offers “a two year window to fix our broken system.”
