HB 818, the bill to keep abortion coverage out of Pennsylvania’s state exchanges under Obamacare, is up for a vote in the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee tomorrow. Remember it passed in the State House on April 23 by a vote of 144-53. Now it’s the Senate’s turn to start the process of getting this passed!

HB 818 was voted out of the House Health Committee on April 15th along a mostly party line vote. On April 17th the House took up HB 818 on second consideration — debating and voting on amendments. All pro-abortion amendments were defeated. Remember passage of this bill would insure that Pennsylvania opts out of abortion funding under the health insurance exchange that will be created by Obamacare.

Hobby Lobby is a Christian-owned national craft store. It has sued to be exempted from the requirement under Obamacare to provide abortion causing drugs and sterilization coverage in its health plans for employees and has lost at every turn. They have indicated they will defy the Obama Administration and not provide this coverage. The CEO and owner, David Green, says the chain potentially faces a fine of $1.3 million per day.

A vote had been scheduled last Thursday in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (CRPD). However, Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) led an effort to prevent that from happening. Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass.) announced at that time that he will instead hold the markup on July 26, the 22nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Yesterday the US House failed to get a 2/3 vote majority in order to ban abortions due to the baby being “the wrong sex.” HR 3541 would have made it a federal offense to knowingly perform a sex-selection abortion or coerce a woman into such a procedure, or to transport a woman across state lines or into the United States to obtain a sex-selection abortion. The American Family Association of Pennsylvania (AFA of PA) is deeply troubled by the failed attempt to obtain the required 2/3 vote to pass HR 3541, but is especially troubled to know that three of the PA delegation voted against the bill.
