Manheim Township School District Reminded of Guidelines Set Down By Congress re National Anthem

(Harrisburg) — Today the American Family Association of Pennsylvania (AFA of PA), a statewide educational organization,  contacted Manheim Township School District Superintendent Dr. Robin Felty with additional information about respecting the National Anthem.   The communication noted, ” US Code 36, Section 301 says, in part, ‘all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart…'”

“It appears that one or two parents misheard or misinterpreted the statement that was read prior to the playing of the National Anthem at Tuesday night’s girls’ soccer game.  Congress has set down specific guidelines that are in the US Code that are to be followed when it comes to the National Anthem.   Those guidelines also note that if the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag was displayed.  It is clear how Congress expects Americans to display dignity and respect for our National Anthem,” noted Diane Gramley, president of the AFA of PA.

As our nation enters into a time of remembrance of the horrific attacks on September 11, 2001, all Americans should join in solidarity to show respect for our National Anthem and the nation it honors.

Professional athletes who make millions of dollars annually, like Colin Kaepernick,  should not be using their public platform to denigrate the nation that has given them the opportunity to thrive.  They should also check to be sure their facts are correct before misleading their fans and fellow players.  Their public profile actions can lead to misunderstandings such as at Manheim Township School District.
