How Did Your Congressman Vote on PRENDA?

Details

The attempt to ban sex selection abortions, the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act HR 3541,  failed yesterday by a vote of 246 to 168 with seven Republicans crossing the aisle to vote “Nay.”  In the PA delegation, three Democrats — Altmire, Critz and Holden — crossed the aisle and voted ‘Yea.”   Remember this vote was under “Suspension of the Rules” and required a 2/3 vote in order to pass.

The bill would have made it a federal offense to knowingly perform a sex-selection abortion or coerce a woman into such a procedure, or to transport a woman across state lines or into the United States to obtain a sex-selection abortion. The woman herself is not liable for prosecution.

Remember a May 17 public opinion poll of 1,016 U.S. adults released by the Charlotte Lozier Institute found that, overall, 77 percent of respondents answered “yes” when asked, “When the fact that the developing baby is a girl is the sole reason for seeking an abortion, do you believe that abortion should be illegal?”  Only 16 percent of all respondents said that abortion should be legal in this circumstance.

On Wednesday President Obama announced his opposition to the bill saying it would “subject doctors to criminal prosecution if they fail to determine” a sex-selection motivation.  Surprise, Surprise, Planned Parenthood also opposed the bill.
