Ask Senators to Oppose the DISCLOSE Act

Details

Yesterday Senate Republicans were able to block Harry Reid’s version of campaign finance — S3369 the Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections Act of 2012 or DISCLOSE Act.  This piece of legislation was just introduced on July 10th and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wants it passed NOW!   Every voting Republican voted against cloture — a motion to limit debate on a motion to proceed to the bill — which requires a 60 vote majority.  (Senator Bob Casey, Jr. voted ‘Yea;’ Senator Toomey voted ‘Nay.’)      The vote was 51 to 44.  Senator Reid has called for further debate today with another cloture vote at 3:00 p.m.   They are desperate to get this passed before the November election!

The bill’s supporters claims it is even handed in its treatment of political players, but the reality is that it is designed to give labor unions a pass.  At least twice the current Supreme Court has called similar legislation unconstitutional.

The National Right to Life Committee says passage of S3369 would “evade the holdings of the U.S. Supreme Court in Citizens United v. FEC (2010), and to discourage and reduce speech that criticizes or annoys those who hold federal office.

Action Steps

Contact Senator Bob Casey, Jr. and ask him to vote ‘Nay’ on cloture (ending debate) for S3369.    Message:  Vote ‘No” on ending the debate on S3369.  The Senate needs to concentrate on important things like passing a budget – something they haven’t done in years – and addressing the tax cuts that are to expire the end of this year.

Contact Senator Pat Toomey.  Message:  Thank you for your “No” vote on ending debate on S3369.  Please hold the line and again vote ‘No’ on this outrageous bill.

It is best to email AND call the Senator’s district office nearest you.  Click here for contact info.
