Senator Rob Portman is Wrong on the Marriage Issue

(Harrisburg) —  Ohio Senator Rob Portman has announced his stand on marriage has changed since his son revealed his same-sex attractions.  The American Family Association of Pennsylvania (AFA of PA), a statewide traditional values group, notes the truth does not change with the circumstances.

“Senator Portman said he had to reconcile his Christian faith with his desire that his son be happy and fulfilled concluding that he would simply concentrate on the Bible’s themes of love and compassion.  The Senator from Ohio should read deeper and acknowledge that those themes of love and compassion come from a God who wants us to leave sin behind, not ignore it.  The only way his son can be happy and fulfilled is to walk away from his sinful lifestyle, not embrace it with the blessing of his father,” noted Diane Gramley, president of the AFA of PA.

Senator Portman’s name is being bantered around as a possible GOP presidential candidate in 2016.  According to Pew Research polls which are conducted each year only 25% of registered Republicans supported same-sex marriage last year.  This number is only up slightly from 21% in 2001.     Portman’s embrace of so-called same-sex marriage will not endear him to Republican voters on the national scene nor those in Ohio when it comes time for re-election.

“As a father Senator Portman wants what is best for all his children, but ignoring his son’s sin and saying God’s love and compassion will simply overlook it is not Biblically sound doctrine.  The books of Romans and I Corinthians make it clear that engaging in homosexual acts is sin and Jesus himself defined marriage as only between one man and one woman in the book of Matthew.  Claiming the Bible says one thing, doesn’t change what it actually says and Senator Portman is making a mistake in overlooking what Scripture actually says,” Gramley further commented.

Rob Portman or any other politician’s declaration that he or she now supports same-sex “marriage” does not change what marriage really is.  If the basic foundation of society — marriage and family — crumbles or is redefined, the nation is not far behind.
