Today the House of Representatives actually voted to repeal major portions of Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood! Unfortunately, half of the Pennsylvania delegation voted against it! All the Democrats, no surprise here, and Republicans Ryan Costello, Charlie Dent, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Pat Meehan voted ‘nay’ on the bill!!
Planned Parenthood receives half a billion dollars — 41% of its annual budget — from our federal tax dollars. Ten videos have helped expose its participation in the sale of body parts from aborted babies.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has scheduled a late Monday vote on a bill to defund Planned Parenthood. The last time such a vote was taken only 42 votes could be garnered. S 1881 was introduced by Senator Joni Ernst, R-Iowa and quickly had 32 co-sponsors. It will require 60 votes to cut off debate and then a simple majority to pass the bill. Senator Bob Casey, Jr. is one of four Democrats who have not committed one way or the other on the bill.
On November 4th the voters sent a message to Republicans that they expect them to take action and rein in the President’s executive orders. Did they get the message? President Obama’s executive action on immigration would allow five million who are in the country illegally to remain without fear of deportation. The Republicans appear hesitant to defund that effort, let your Congressman know what you think!
President Obama met with Congressional leaders last evening to discuss reopening the government and raising the debt limit. Nothing was accomplished. However, there is word out that 18 “moderate” Republicans are scheming to partner with Democrats to offer a ‘clean’ continuing resolution that would simply fund the government but strip the Obamacare defunding language. This list includes five Pennsylvanians: Charlie Dent, Patrick Meehan, Michael Fitzpatrick, Lou Barletta and Jim Gerlach.
Today the US House passed a bill to defund Obamacare, but would keep the government running through mid-December. (Question: Where in the Constitution does it allow for continuing resolutions??) The vote was 230-189 mostly along party lines with one Republican voting ‘nay’ and two Democrats voting ‘aye.’ Also, 13 did not vote including Pennsylvania’s Chaka Fattah and Tim Murphy.
Erick Erickson with Red State lays out the strategy so all can claim “victory:” House leadership will pass a continuing resolution in the House. It will fund Obamacare. Eric Cantor and Pete Sessions will also make sure a separate resolution to defund Obamacare gets passed that would amend the CR to defund Obamacare if the Senate votes for it, which they of course will not. These two separate votes will be combined with great fan fare to make it look like House Republicans are voting for a CR that defunds Obamacare. But the Senate will pass the CR that funds Obamacare, sending it to the President, and ignore the defund resolution.
Next Wednesday May 23 the AFA of PA will be participating in a news conference introducing Representative Daryl Metcalfe’s bill to defund Planned Parenthood. It will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Media Center in the State Capitol.
