Philadelphia Mayor John Street to Perform Same-Sex Marriage Ceremony!

This coming Saturday will be another dark day in the history of the City of Brotherly Love.  Even though Mayor Street has officiated over less than ten marriages during his two terms as mayor, he has chosen to be involved in yet another one on Saturday.  But he will not be uniting a bride and groom in marriage, but two men – one of which is his Deputy Secretary of External Affairs.  These activities will be taking place in Philadelphia’s City Hall.

The Mayor has insisted that this is not really marriage, but homosexual activists view it quite differently.  The ‘groom and groom’ view it as a political statement and from neighboring New Jersey, Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality said, "Every single time a public official like Mayor Street performs a ceremony, it strengthens the case for marriage equality."

What kind of message is the mayor sending to Philadelphians and the rest of Pennsylvania – especially the children of this state?

If the Mayor’s actions disturb you, please consider contacting his office.  Click here to read the news release.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.) Contact Philadelphia Mayor John Street at mayor@phila.gov   Please also consider calling the mayor’s Executive Secretary Betty Kibler at (215) 686-2181 or his Chief of Staff Joyce Wilkerson at (215) 686-7508.

Now That PA’s Hate Crimes Law is Unconstitutional, What’s Next?

If you didn’t get the news – the PA hate crimes law was declared unconstitutional in a court decision yesterday.  Click here to read our news release.

Attorney General Tom Corbett has thirty days to decide if he will appeal the decision to the PA Supreme Court.

Governor Rendell is already calling on the legislature “to immediately approve appropriate legislation reinstating the measure.”

So, what can we do in the meantime?  We have yet another chance to stop the effort to add ‘actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity’ to the PA hate crimes law.  Call your State Senator and State Representative and encourage them to not support any new hate crimes bill.

Some facts to consider:

q     Hate crime laws are unnecessary – are there any violent crimes not driven by hate?  Legislators said back in 2002 said this bill was meant to deal with blood on the streets . . . thugs and hooligans.  The arrest of the Philadelphia Eleven proved that wrong!   Click here to read the timeline and quotes from legislators.

q     According to FBI Stats there were 118 ‘hate crimes’ in Pennsylvania in 2005 – the most recent statistics available.

q     Homosexual men are in more danger of violence from their partners than from someone who does not agree with their lifestyle.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Please consider contacting your State Senator and State Representative at their district office over Thanksgiving break.  Click here for contact information.    If you don’t know who your state legislator is, please enter your county or zip code in the upper right hand corner of this webpage.

1.)    ENDA Passes – How did your Congressman vote?

2.)    Update on Hate Crimes

1.)  Last night the Employment Non-Discrimination Act - H.R. 3685 -- passed in the U.S. House.  It did not include ‘gender identity’ language, but is still a very dangerous bill.  The vote was 235-184 which is not veto proof.  Here’s the vote breakdown:   Yeas – Democrats 200, Republicans 35; Nos – Democrats 25, Republicans 159.  Click here to see how our Pennsylvania Congressmen voted on ENDA.

The passage of ENDA adds ‘sexual orientation’ to hiring laws that will affect all businesses with 15 or more employees – including Christian businesses like bookstores, publishers and coffee houses.  Additionally, even though the words ‘gender identity’ are not in the bill, under the term “perceived,” in Section 4 transgenders, etc., can still claim protection.   Under Section 4 of this bill, workplace discrimination is prohibited as follows:  “It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise discriminate against any individual with respect to the compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment of the individual, because of such individual's actual or perceived sexual orientation . . .”

House Republican Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) said in a statement, “In this case, the so-called ‘Employment Non-Discrimination Act’ creates a legal quagmire for employees who practice, or even acknowledge, their religious beliefs – depending on where they happen to work, and subject to judicial interpretation. In the process, it erodes a basic, fundamental right bestowed upon us by our Creator – and a right guaranteed to every American under the U.S. Constitution.”

“As a former president of a Baptist college in Missouri, supporters of this bill have been quick to assure me that its most onerous provisions would not apply to that school. But no such exemption is available for Christian bookstore owners, as an example, or any other small business in which people of faith and deep religious conviction are relied upon as an integral part of the workforce.”  Click here to read the entire article in Human Events

2.)  The hate crimes bill has drifted into the background as the ENDA debate has taken the forefront in recent weeks.  There is still a chance that the hate crimes amendment can be stripped from the Defense Reauthorization Act before it reaches the President’s desk!  Progress on the bill continues to be made with leaders in the Senate and House working to iron out differences between the House and Senate versions of the Defense Authorization bill. The Senate version contains the hate crimes language while the House version does not. The House passed the hate crimes bill as a stand alone measure.

Several Congressional aides have said House and Senate lawmakers seeking to resolve differences between competing versions of the FY08 defense authorization bill hope to wrap up their conference talks in the next several days and pass the bill before the Thanksgiving recess.  Committee leaders are still weighing whether to include in the final bill unrelated hate crimes language that passed on the Senate’s version of the authorization measure.

The President has indicated he will veto the Defense Authorization Act if it contains the hate crimes language when it reaches his desk, but with the ongoing war on terror that would place him in an awkward situation.  We still have a chance to make a difference!

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  How did your Congressman vote on ENDA?  If he or she voted ‘yes’ let them know your thoughts on forcing your business or your place of employment to hire homosexuals and bisexuals.  If he voted ‘no,’ please call him to say ‘thanks’ for taking a stand for businesses in Pennsylvania.  Click here for contact information.

2.)  Please CALL the following and urge them to STRIP the Hate Crimes Amendment from the Defense Authorization Act!

Senate Armed Services Committee:
Chairman:                  Carl Levin (D-MI)        202-224-6221
Ranking Mbr:           John McCain (R-AZ)   202-224-2235

House Armed Services Committee:
Chairman:                   Ike Skelton (D-4, MO)            202-225-2876

Vote on New ENDA Expected in House Committee on Thursday

In recent weeks there has been an ongoing debate among homosexual/transgender groups about whether to include ‘gender identity’ in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.  At the present time Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) has introduced a new version of ENDA that does not include that language – H.R. 3685.  Remember this is the federal bill that will require all employers with fifteen or more employees to hire homosexuals and bisexuals.

Homosexual and transgender groups are in an uproar and are putting extreme pressure on Congressmen to support the old version of ENDA – H.R. 2015.  But Congressman Frank is moving forward and has introduced H.R. 3685 with the ‘sexual orientation’ language and H.R. 3686 with ‘gender identity’ language.  Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has promised homosexual activists that as soon as they have the votes, she will fast track the bill with the ‘gender identity’ language.

Supposedly religious organizations are exempt in this new version, but here’s the definition in the bill:  “RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION- The term `religious organization' means--

(A) a religious corporation, association, or society; or

(B) a school, college, university, or other educational institution or institution of learning, if--

(i) the institution is in whole or substantial part controlled, managed, owned, or supported by a particular religion, religious corporation, association, or society; or

(ii) the curriculum of the institution is directed toward the propagation of a particular religion.”

This definition may exempt churches, but it places parachurch ministries at grave risk.  Recently one court found that a United Methodist children’s home was not a ‘religious’ organization under a very similar definition in the 1964 Civil Rights Law.    Another court recently devised a nine-part, subjective ‘balancing’ test to decide whether a Jewish community center was ‘religious’ under the very same federal law.  Two of these ‘secularizing’ factors included ‘under direct control of a church’ and provide ‘secular products’ such as food shelter, and counseling.  This would describe many parachurch organizations, thus they would not be exempt from the provisions of H.R. 3685 and would be required to hire homosexuals and bisexuals.

Neither H.R. 3685 nor H.R. 3686 allow an employer to provide separate bathroom facilities for ‘sexually confused individuals.’

That’s just a quick update of what has been going on in Washington over the past couple weeks . . . the effort is still very much alive to force all employers with 15 or more employees to hire homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender individuals.

H.R. 3685 is currently in the House Committee on Education and Labor and a vote is anticipated on Thursday, October 18th  Three PA Congressmen are on that Committee.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  If Congressman Joe Sestek (D-7th), Congressman Jason Altmire (D-4th), or Congressman Todd Russell Platts (R-19th) represent you in Washington, please call them and ask them to vote “No” on H.R. 3685 when it comes up for a vote on Thursday, October 18th

2.)  If your Congressman is not listed above, please call him or her and ask for a “No”  vote on H.R. 3685, when it comes to the floor of the House for a vote.  Click here to find your Congressman.  Key in your nine-digit zip code in the upper left hand corner.

Talking Points:

1.)  H.R. 3685 will be a direct assault on religious liberties

2.)  H.R. 3685 takes away freedom from an employer to do what is best for his company.

3.)  H.R. 3685 will most negatively impact the majority of businesses in America – the small business, which is the very backbone of America’s economy.

Board of Governors Agree on Faculty Contract - -not good news!

On October 11th the Board of Governors of the PA State System of Higher Education voted to give domestic partner benefits to the same-sex partners of homosexual faculty members.  Only two Representatives of the five elected officials who are on the Board voted against it.  Those were Representative Matthew Baker and Representative Mike Hanna.   Click here to read the news release issued on Friday.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Please contact Representatives Matt Baker (R-68) and Mike Hanna (D-76) and tell them ‘thanks’ for taking a stand for marriage and the family in their ‘no’ vote on the PA State System of Higher Education faculty contract.  Click here for Representative Baker’s contact info and here for Representative Hanna’s.

1.)    Ask Your Congressman to Uphold President Bush’s Veto of S-Chip

2.)    Is this coming to a school district near you?

1.)    On October 3rd President Bush vetoed the greatly expanded State Children’s Health Insurance Program or S-CHIP bill. S-CHIP’s original goal was to provide health insurance for children whose family income is too high to qualify for Medicaid and too low to afford health insurance.

Here are some stats:

q    Would include an increase up to $50 billion over five years.   President Bush has said he would agree to a $5 billion or 20% increase over five years.

q    Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) has admitted that "this legislation moves us a giant step further down the road to nationalizing health care."

q    A provision covers moms-to-be, but not their children.  The unborn are not recognized!

q    Expansion of S-CHIP would include families who are 300% to 400% above poverty level – that’s about $82,000 for a family of four.  In 2005, about 55% of the eligible children already had private health insurance.

q    In 2006, SCHIP spent approximately $8 billion to cover 7.4 million individuals.

q    SCHIP currently enrolls 6.6 million children.  In reality, about 700,000 children actually qualify as “needy.”

q    Additionally, SCHIP currently enrolls some 670,000 adults.

q    A 156% increase in federal cigarette taxes, from .39 cents to $1.00 per pack, is expected to provide the $35 to $50 billion over five years.  This  would require millions of new smokers to purchase enough cigarettes to provide the tax money.  Additionally, poor families are hit the hardest with cigarette taxes.

Efforts are currently underway to try and ‘convince’ enough Congressman to switch their ‘No’ votes.  H.R. 976  passed in the House on September 25th by a vote of 265 to 159.  Click here to see how your Congressman voted.  Two days later the S-CHIP expansion passed in the Senate by a veto proof majority of 67 to 29 with both PA Senators voting for it.

2.)  Recently the AFA of PA uncovered the fact that the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network had a conference last month to tell interested students, teachers and others how to start a Gay Straight Alliance or GSA at their school.  In response to this, the AFA of PA sent an information packet to all 44 school districts in Allegheny County.  These packets provided information about the liability of schools who promote the homosexual lifestyle.  Click here to read our news release. What’s your school doing?

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact your U.S. Congressman and ask him or her to truly support needy children and to not support any effort to override President Bush’s veto of S-CHIP.  This program must be trimmed down to get it back on course to help the neediest of children, not those who have existing health insurance or adults.  Click here for contact information.  Two phone calls would be the best – as they are getting phone calls from those who want President Bush’s veto overridden.  Please call both their D.C. and the district office nearest you.  Make sure you let them know that you are a constituent.  If Congressman John Peterson, Joe Pitts, or Bill Shuster is your Representatives tell them ‘thanks’ for voting not to expand S-CHIP.

2.)  Is your school district considering a Gay Straight Alliance?  If so, please contact the AFA of PA.

Did Your Congressman Vote to Recognize the Islamic Holy Month of Ramadan?

On October 2 the U.S. House passed House Resolution 635 which officially recognizes the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.   It passed by a vote of 376 to 0 with 42 members voting ‘Present.”  How did your Congressman vote – click here to see – but I can save you time – EVERY Pennsylvania Congressman voted for it!!

1.)    Vote on HB 288 – to require hospitals to provide Plan B to sexual assault victims

2.)    Last Day to Register to Vote for November Election

1.)    A vote is planned in the State House TODAY on HB 288 which would require ALL hospitals and healthcare providers in Pennsylvania to not only provide information about Plan B and other abortifacient drugs – but to administer it upon request.  Please contact your Representative and ask him or her to vote ‘No’ not only on HB 288 but any amendments designed to weaken this bill.  Such amendments would make it appear ‘more acceptable’ and more likely to pass i.e. an amendment to allow exceptions for religious hospitals would still require all other hospitals in PA to administer these drugs.

2.)    Last day to register to vote in the November 6th election is Tuesday October 9th.  Voter registration applications must be postmarked by that date.  This is a very important election – as all are – many judicial candidates will be voted upon.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact your State Representative by clicking here If you do not know who your State Representative is, you can key in your nine-digit zip code in the upper right hand corner.  Ask him or her to vote ‘No’ not only on HB 288 but any amendments designed to weaken this bill.

General Pace Reiterates that Homosexual Acts are Immoral – Is Jeered by Onlookers

During testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Peter Pace, was given an opportunity to clarify his ‘homosexual acts are immoral’ remarks from a March interview.

General Pace once again said homosexual acts are wrong and should not be permitted in the military any more than adultery should be condoned.  Senator Tom Harkin D-Iowa, thinks both the homosexual and adultery policies in the U.S. Military Code of Justice need to be changed.

On Wednesday General pace said, “ . . . that we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God's law."

In June President Bush announced he was not re-nominating General Pace for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff position. General Pace retires on September 30th

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Take a few minutes to tell General Pace ‘thanks’ for his service to the country, his willingness to take a public stand for morality and the military ban on homosexuals serving in the military.    Click here to leave your comments.

Hate Crimes Bill Likely to be Voted on This Morning – Senators Casey and Specter Need to Hear from You, Your Family and Friends!

The Senate moves closer to a vote on the Matthew Shepherd Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 – now being offered as two amendments to the Defense Authorization bill --   HR 1585.   On Tuesday Senator Harry Reid offered Amendment 3035 which is identical to Senator Ted Kennedy’s Amendment 2067 to HR 1585.

The name itself shows how desperate the Democrats are to deceive the American people.  In November 2004 the program 20/20 revealed that Matthew Shepherd’s murder was not a hate crime. He was murdered during a robbery attempt and not because he identified as homosexual.  His murderers were sentenced to life in prison even though Wyoming does not have a hate crimes law.  The prosecution would have sought the death penalty, but Matthew’s parents do not believe in it.

Yesterday Senator Kennedy and others, including Senator Bob Casey, Jr. joined in the call for a cloture vote.

Senator Casey’s reasons included:

·               Strengthen on law enforcement’s ability to prosecute hate crimes

·         Help DOJ work with local enforcement

·         Another personal story that we need to be “reminded of” – Matthew Shepard.

·         This is about ‘stamping out hate in the hearts of people across the country.’

·         ‘Fully and vigorously prosecute these type of crimes”

Senator Kennedy has tried to say that the hate crimes bill belongs as part of the Defense Authorization Act because of ‘domestic terrorism.’  Is he saying that those who do not approve of the homosexual lifestyle are domestic terrorists?  Here are some of Kennedy’s remarks from Wednesday:

·         Said we are morally COMPELLED to pass this bill

·         Said hate crimes was germane because of DOMESTIC TERRORISM

·         Mentioned Democrat values to do so

·         Said hate crimes will STRENGTHEN the MILITARY

·         Said ALL HATE needs to be FEDERALLY prosecuted.

·      Mentioned “25 deaths a day” statistic, but did NOT delineate the portion that is actually related to sexual identity or gender identity.

Former Attorney General Ed Meese has explained why the "hate crimes" measure is unconstitutional:

“Congress only has express constitutional jurisdiction over three crimes: treason, counterfeiting and piracy on the high seas. Because the federal government is one of limited and enumerated powers, Congress must find authority in other constitutional clauses to federalize particular crimes or such acts would violate federalism principles, the Tenth Amendment, or other structural limits in the Constitution.”

President Bush has said he will veto the Defense Authorization bill if it contains the hate crimes provisions.  Why are the Democrats willing to chance this veto?

Message:  “There is NO place for social policy debate on a Department of Defense bill – especially knowing that such a measure DERAILS THE BILL entirely.”

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Please take time to make two phone calls . . . contact the Senators’ district office nearest you and their D.C. office.  Please call.  Too many times e-mails can be easily ignored and deleted.  Click here for Senator Specter’s contact information. 1.)    Hate Crimes Update -- Vote on Thursday

2.)    Vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act May be THIS WEEK

1.) As we continue fighting against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, we cannot forget that a vote on the federal hate crimes bill is still pending.  It has currently been attached as an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act – SA 2067 to HR 1585   There are now over 500 amendments to this bill.  Not all will be discussed and voted on, but you can be sure that Kennedy’s hate crimes amendment will be!  We just got word from a reliable source that the vote in the Senate will be this Thursday!  Remember this same language has already passed the U.S. House.  Click here to see how your Congressman voted on this outrageous bill.

2.)  The Employment Non-Discrimination Act – HR 2015sounds like an ‘okay’ bill.   And polls consistently show that Americans do not want people to be fired simply because they are homosexual.  But exactly what are these Americans being told or not being told about this bill?  Are they being told that this bill will require all businesses with fifteen or more employees to permit men who think they are women to use the women’s restroom and workplace showers?

According to the bill, only an organization “which has as its primary purpose religious ritual or worship or the teaching or spreading of religious doctrine or belief” are exempt.  Are they being told that the very narrow ‘religious exemption’ in the bill will require Christian schools and daycares to hire homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenders?

Americans are fair-minded, but are they willing to toss out all decency in the workplace.  Are they willing to require Christian schools, daycares and bookstores to hire those who oppose their beliefs and mission?

Even though this bill is anti-business, as of last week not one business association had announced opposition to this bill!

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  If freedom of speech and equal protection under the law is important to you, please contact Senator Specter and Senator Casey.  Please take time to make two phone calls . . . contact their district office nearest you and their D.C. office.  Please call.  Too many times e-mails can be easily ignored and deleted.  Click here for Senator Specter’s contact information. Click here for Senator Casey’s information. Make sure you leave your name and address when you make the calls.   Remember the vote currently is scheduled for Thursday!

Message:  Vote ‘No’ on Amendment # 2067 –the Kennedy Amendment—to the Defense Authorization bill.

2.)  Please contact your Congressman and ask him or her to vote ‘No’ on HR 2015 – the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.  Click here to find your Congressman – key in your nine-digit zip code in the upper left hand corner.  Share this information with others, click here for an ENDA Fact Sheet.

TALKING POINTS:

This Hate Crimes bill:

q     Federalizes each and every State and local crime

q     Threatens religious leaders and groups with criminal prosecution and investigations into a suspect’s thoughts, beliefs and statements.

q     Requires criminal investigations to probe if a crime occurred “because of” bias towards a protected group, and opens the door to criminal investigations of a suspect’s philosophical beliefs, politics, biases, religion, activities, and past statements.

q     Creates unequal treatment of victims by treating crimes against protected groups more seriously than non-protected groups (e.g. the murder of a homosexual victim will be treated more seriously than a heterosexual victim.)

q     Violates the Commerce Clause, the Thirteenth, the Fourteenth and the Fifteenth Amendments.

q     The Hate Crimes bill is unnecessary: the underlying offense is already fully and aggressively prosecuted in all 50 States. FBI statistics show that the incidence of hate crimes has actually declined over the last ten years.

q     Violent attacks upon people or property are already illegal, regardless of the motive behind them.  With ‘hate crimes’ laws, however, people are essentially given one penalty for the actions they engaged in, and an additional penalty for the politically incorrect thoughts that allegedly motivated those actions.

Six Years After 9/11 -- Controversy Over Flight 93 Memorial – You Decide

We were told after 911 that this event would be as significant as President Kennedy’s assassination and we would remember the exact location we were when we heard the news of the attacks on the Twin Towers. Well, I for one do remember that location for both events – the first sitting in a fourth grade classroom when a fifth grade teacher came over to make the announcement about President Kennedy and the latter driving in a car listening to the news broadcast of our local American Family Radio station.

Much water has gone under the proverbial bridge since that time,

BUT

We continue seeing holes in our border security and between 12 and 20 million illegal aliens in this nation with very few voices in Washington, D.C. effectively addressing the problem. Courts have struck down local efforts to address their illegal immigration problems. Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) has formed a group of concerned state legislators from around the country and also introduced a packet of bills to address the illegal immigration problem in Pennsylvania. (HB 750-754)

We see Islamic prayer being permitted in our nation’s schools while military Chaplains who pray in Jesus’ name while in uniform are facing court martial charges.

In Maine placing a ham sandwich on a table where Muslims eat lunch was investigated as a hate crime!

Islamic imams who were removed from a U.S. Airways flight because of their suspicious activity are suing the airline and passengers who reported their activity. The imams' strategy is a familiar one. Muslim extremists have paved the road to acceptance in Europe by playing the "discrimination" card to their advantage. Now they've turned their attention to America where they hope to topple our objections to radical Islam by using tolerance as a means to induce passivity.

I could go on, but recently another controversy has come to my attention. I’ll let you decide whether it’s fact or fiction. But wouldn’t it be considered a great Islamic victory if they have in fact sneaked an Islamic memorial mosque in right under our noses?

Is the proposed Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA in Somerset County a memorial to the heroes of Flight 93 or something else? Is it really a terrorist memorial mosque or is it just ‘coincidental’ that it appears that way? Obviously the father of one of the victims of this terrorist attack is taking this very seriously as he has demanded that his son’s name be removed from the memorial!

Click here for the official design of the Flight 93 National Memorial.

Alec Rawls has been investigating the controversial design of the Flight 93 Memorial for several years. His website has a lot of information and I encourage you to check it out.

Michelle Malkin has written several columns concerning the controversy, but the media has largely ignored it. Especially read "Monumental Surrender" which is linked from the first line of the above article.

So who is really being memorialized by the Flight 93 Memorial? You decide.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.) Pray for America. Pastor Joe Wright’s 1996 prayer before the Kansas Legislature reminds us how far our nation had fallen in 1996. Unfortunately, the direction of our nation has not changed since then, not even since 911. Click here to read his prayer.  I am again reminded of the words of II Chronicles 7:14 – "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." Pray for America.

Subcommittee Holds “Hearing” on Employment Non-Discrimination Act – ENDA --  . . . . or at least that what they called it!   They need to hear our side now!

On Wednesday the House Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions heard very biased testimony during what was called ‘hearings’ on ENDA.  All witnesses except one spoke in favor of H.R. 2015 which would add ‘actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity’ to employer non-discrimination laws.  Of course, one reason for this could be the fact that the Human Rights Campaign, a national homosexual group, helped put the panel of witnesses together.

This is yet another attempt to hijack the civil rights movement – equating homosexuality, bisexuality and transgenderism to skin color and nationality as immutable or unchangeable characteristics.

Here are a couple definitions found in H.R. 2015:

GENDER IDENTITY- The term `gender identity' means the gender-related identity, appearance, or mannerisms or other gender-related characteristics of an individual, with or without regard to the individual's designated sex at birth.

SEXUAL ORIENTATION- The term `sexual orientation' means homosexuality, heterosexuality, or bisexuality.

This bill includes a very narrow religious exemption:  “This Act shall not apply to any of the employment practices of a religious corporation, association, educational institution, or society which has as its primary purpose religious ritual or worship or the teaching or spreading of religious doctrine or belief.”

Note “has as its primary purpose religious ritual or worship” has been interpreted by legal counsel that Christian schools would not be totally exempt and would be required to hire homosexual, bisexual and transgender English, Math, History teachers – or any other class that’s primary purpose was not religious.

There is still an opportunity to submit testimony concerning this bill.  If you have children or grandchildren who attend a Christian school, please consider submitting written testimony expressing your concerns to the House Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions by September 14th.   Do you know a Christian school administrator that you could contact?

For Christian business owners there is absolutely no exemption; they would be required by law to hire homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender individuals.  Even large pro-family organizations such as Focus on the Family, Coral Ridge Ministries and the American Family Association would be required by law to hire such people.

Oh, and Congress seems to have thought of ‘everything’ – even showers, dressing rooms and bathrooms:

“Nothing in this Act shall be construed to establish an unlawful employment practice based on actual or perceived gender identity due to the denial of access to shared shower or dressing facilities in which being seen fully unclothed is unavoidable, provided that the employer provides reasonable access to adequate facilities that are not inconsistent with the employee's gender identity as established with the employer at the time of employment or upon notification to the employer that the employee has undergone or is undergoing gender transition, whichever is later.” – Section 8 (3).

Click here to read what happened recently in Seattle when two transgenders got upset because they were removed from a bathroom they thought they ‘belonged in.’  By the way, Seattle has a non-discrimination law which has ‘gender identity’ language.  If ENDA passes this will be a common occurrence in every workplace bathroom in America!

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Please consider submitting written testimony – no more than five pages – to the subcommittee concerning the negative ramifications of H.R. 2015 -- the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

If you want to submit your comments/concerns about HR 2015, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the comments should be sent with a simple cover letter.

To avoid the inevitable delay in the House mail system, these documents should be emailed in PDF or Word file format directly to Molly Salmi with the Committee at molly.salmi@mail.house.gov

If you have something that you want to be included, it should be received by Molly no later than the close of business on Friday, September 14, 2007

To ensure that your comments are included in the printed hearing record (and not simply placed in the hearing file that is available for copying), your comments should be no longer than five (5) pages in length.

Suggested cover letter language (underlined sections need insertions or selections)

“On behalf of ______, I/we would request your assistance to ensure that the attached comments/concerns is/are included in the printed hearing record for the hearing held on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, by the Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee on H.R. 2015, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2007.”

Tell Philadelphia School District CEO ‘Thanks”

It became public knowledge yesterday that the Philadelphia School District would not include “Gay History Month” in their official calendar.  Last year was the first time that such a designation was on the school calendar that is mailed to over 200,000 parents in the school district.  Homosexual activists are not happy and are already contacting the school district asking them to again include “Gay History Month.”

Yesterday afternoon the AFA of PA faxed Thomas Brady, the interim CEO of the school district and a retired Army officer, thanking him for this decision.  He has also said that he will not support any “GLBT study programs.”  Last year ninth graders had to read Am I Blue?, a collection of short stories about teens coming out as ‘gay.’  Click here to read our news release.  You can also click here to read today’s Philadelphia Inquirer story and the eleven words they gave the AFA of PA!

Last year’s inclusion of ‘Gay History Month’ was just another attempt to desensitize children to homosexuality and give them the false message that “Gay is okay.”

For once a school district has listened to the concerns of parents!

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Please contact Thomas Brady and tell him ‘thanks’ for doing the right thing and not including ‘Gay History Month’ in this year’s calendar.  Call him at (215) 400-4300, ext. 201 or e-mail at callcenter@phila.k12.pa.us

1.)    Philadelphia Phillies Gay Community Day – August 9th

2.)    Domestic Partner Benefits for Same-sex Partners of Faculty Members Working for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

1.)    The Philadelphia Phillies fifth Gay Community Day will be on August 9th in Citizens Bank Park.  Interestingly enough, I have found absolutely nothing on the Phillies’ website about this.  But I believe this can be explained by an e-mail response that I received from them “this is a group that has taken advantage of our Corporate/Community Partnership.  Such group purchases are not official Phillies promotional dates.”  The information is readily available on several homosexual websites including Gay and Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia and Philly Gay Days.  We have it from a good source that if 500 homosexuals attend Gay Community Night then Ann Butchart, the first homosexual elected in Philadelphia, has been designated to toss the pitch.  Very disturbing is the fact that this night is also “Military Appreciation Night” and “Mentoring Night.”  Active duty  military and veterans and their families receive a special discount ticket. Additionally, ‘Mentoring Night’ will bring more children in as members of mentoring programs are invited to bring a young person and receive two tickets for $16.00.

Lets picture next Thursday night’s game:  military personnel and veterans and their families along with a group of people who want to infiltrate and redefine the military; in addition, children who are part of mentoring programs along side a group that is already infiltrating their schools with the message that ‘Gay is okay.”  There’s something wrong with this picture!

2.)    The contract that currently sits before the State System of Higher Education  (PASSHE)  Board of Governorsand the State Employees Benefit Trust Fund Board of Trustees would  extend health care coverage to the same-sex partners of faculty members.  The vote will probably come within the next week or so.  The AFA of PA has sent a packet of information to the 35 members of these boards.  The information included Dr. John Diggs “The Health Risks of Gay Sex”  and Corporate Research Council’s “Do Domestic Partner Benefits Make Good Business Sense.”  The information included in the latter notes that Wellpoint, Inc. which owns Blue Cross of California and a number of other major insurers found that  “The loss ratio (health-care costs as a percent of premiums paid) for same-sex domestic partners was 17.1% HIGHER than for the remaining two party members (meaning opposite-sex couples).”

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  If the Philadelphia Phillies Gay Community Day, especially in conjunction with “Military Appreciation Night” and “Mentoring Night,” concerns you, please consider contacting the Phillies by clicking here or calling (215) 463-6000.

2.)  Please take a little time and contact these members of the PASSHE Board of Governors:  Chairman – Kenneth Jarin at 717-720-4420; Representative Michael Hanna ; Senator Vincent Hughes  ; Senator James Rhoades

Representative Matthew Baker has consistently voted against efforts to extend such coverage to homosexuals.  Please tell him ‘thanks.’   Click here for additional members.

1. )  Knoebels Grove Amusement Park to Allow Pride Picnic – August 11th

2.)  U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Continues Stalling on President Bush’s judicial nominees – click to read our news release.

1.)     A couple years ago we found that Knoebel’s Grove, a very popular family amusement park in Elysburg, was permitting a ‘pride picnic.’  Last year we found no  information; our guess is they changed their means of getting the word out.  But this year we do know that Knoebel’s Grove will be the site of a ‘Pride Picnic’ the afternoon of August 11th.  Details are still sketchy at this point.  Two years ago this information was available “New this year will be the ALL GAY PHOENIX roller coaster. All picnic participants will gather to make the famed wooden classic roller coaster a QUEER COASTER starting at 6:00 PM.”  It would appear that this type activity would be with the blessing of the park.

Why should this be of concern?  Fathers and mothers should not be faced  with having to explain to their children why two men or two women are holding hands or kissing.

Increasingly sexual activity between male homosexuals in public
restrooms is becoming a problem.  (i.e. restrooms in Strawbridge
Department store in Philadelphia and a few years ago restrooms at the
Camp Hill Mall and public parks in Pittsburgh).  In the Philadelphia
incident, a 10-year old boy and his father went in to use the restroom and
witnessed the sexual activity.  Parents should not have to worry that their
sons may walk in on this type situation!

Although, it’s not just homosexual men anymore.   The last part of June
a pregnant mom and her daughter walked into the public restroom at a
community Pool in Seminole County, Florida.  What they discovered
shocked them.  Click here to read the story.

Not all who identify as homosexual engage in this type activity, but it
should be of concern to parents.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)   If the Knoebels Grove Pride Picnic concerns you, please contact them at 1.800-487-4386.   Also please share this information with family and friends.

2.)  Senator Arlen Specter is getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of action on President Bush’s judicial nominees in the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Let’s not forget that this inactivity directly affects Pennsylvania with the absence created on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals with Samuel Alito being confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court.  On July 17th President Bush nominated Shalom Stone, a New Jersey attorney, to fill Justice Alito’s position; unfortunately at this rate he has a long rate ahead of him!  Please contact  Senator Specter and tell him ‘thanks’ for working to get the judicial confirmation process back on track  as many of these open positions represent a judicial crisis.  Click here for contact information.

1.)    Update on Status of Hate Crimes Amendment to Defense Authorization bill

2.)    Homosexuals Try to Force Fort Lauderdale Mayor to Resign

1.)      This afternoon after staging what the Associated Press has called a publicity stunt and a pajama party by holding an all night session in the Senate to force Republicans to change their votes and vote in favor of mandating troop withdrawal from Iraq by April 2008, Senator Harry Reid pulled the Defense Reauthorization bill (H.R. 1585).  Remember this is the bill that Senator Ted Kennedy attached the hate crimes bill to last Wednesday.   NOTE:  The Defense authorization bill doesn't have to pass in order for the Defense appropriations bill to become law. While the authorization bill sets priorities for things like weapons systems in the defense budget, only the appropriations bill actually funds those priorities.   In short, from the perspective of Pentagon operations, the lack of an authorization bill "isn't a problem, period, as long as an appropriations bill is passed," says Steve Koziack of the Center on Strategic and Budgetary Priorities.

2.)      The mayor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida has decided to do something about homosexual activity in the public restrooms in his city.   This has upset homosexual activists and they are calling for him to resign because of his ‘homophobic’ comments.   The Sun-Sentinel currently has an online poll asking your opinion as to whether the major should resign.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  As we are in the middle of this lull concerning the hate crimes bill, please be in prayer that Senators will take the time to look at the facts and begin questioning the need for this so-called ‘Matthew Shepherd Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007.”    We already have laws on the books to address, murder, assault, property damage, etc.  Our Constitution provides equal protection, not special protections for ‘special groups.’

2.)  Please consider taking a few minutes to weigh in on the online poll concerning the Fort Lauderdale mayor.  The poll can be found about ľ of the way down the right hand side of the page.  At this point in time the majority of respondents are saying he needs to resign.  If Mayor Naugle is forced out because of his efforts to curtail homosexual activity in the public restrooms, what message will this send to other politicians across not only Florida, but the rest of the county?  I’m not sure how long the poll will be up, so please consider participating ASAP.

Senator Ted Kennedy’s Tactic to Appease Homosexual Activists Places Our Troops in Danger   -- Senator Specter and Senator Casey Need to Hear From You Again

As you know, last Wednesday afternoon Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) filed the Hate Crimes bill as an amendment to the Defense Reauthorization bill.  This is one of over 200 amendments that have now been offered to this bill!  They will not all be debated, but you can be sure that Senate Amendment 2067 will be.  To view click here, then click on ‘Amendments’ and on this page scroll down to amendment number 86.

Placing the hate crimes bill as an amendment to a bill that is already being debated on the floor of the Senate, places this on the fast track.  Additionally, it bypasses the committee process.  This is a sneaky and underhanded move.  It places President Bush, in a difficult position.  If the amendment is still part of the Defense Reauthorization bill when it reaches his desk, to veto the hate crimes bill he must now veto the bill that funds the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Please contact Senator Casey’s and Specter’s offices again and ask them to vote “No’ on Senate Amendment # 2067 of the Defense Reauthorization bill.

Also, consider contacting Senator Kennedy’s office and expressing outrage that he would make this move and place our troops in more danger.  Please be Christ-like during your phone conversation.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Click here for contact information for Senator Casey. Click here for contact information for Senator Specter.

Message:  ‘Vote ‘No’ on Senate Amendment # 2067 of the Defense Reauthorization bill. Equal Justice for All -- not special protections for certain groups.’

Please call the Senators' Washington offices and the district office nearest you.

Talking Points at the end of this alert.

2.)  Consider contacting Senator Ted Kennedy’s office.  His phone number is (202) 224-4543.  Question:  Why place special rights for homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenders ahead of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan?

TALKING POINTS:

1.)    We oppose all Thought Crimes laws in principle, because penalizing people specifically for their thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes would undermine the freedom of speech and thought at the heart of our democracy.  However, the inclusion of ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity’ among the categories of protection sends the false message that deviant sexual behaviors are equivalent to other categories of protection such as race or sex.

2.)    The very term ‘hate crime’ is offensive in that it implies that mere disapproval of homosexual behavior constitutes a form of ‘hate’ equivalent to racial bigotry.

3.)    By ratifying the Thought Crimes mentality, these bills pave the way for future expansions of its scope in ways that could eventually threaten freedom of speech and religion.

4.)    In some jurisdictions that have adopted these laws, “hate crimes” have been defined to include not just violent physical acts, but verbal ones as well, using terms like ‘hate speech,’ ‘intimidation,’ and even ‘verbal assault.’

5.)    Violent attacks upon people or property are already illegal, regardless of the motive behind them.  With ‘hate crimes’ laws, however, people are essentially given one penalty for the actions they engaged in, and an additional penalty for the politically incorrect thoughts that allegedly motivated those actions.

Ted Kennedy Pulls a ‘Fast One’ – Changes Tactic on Hate Crimes Bill

Late Wednesday Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) offered the Hate Crimes bill (S1105) as an amendment to the Defense Reauthorization bill.   He may be realizing that S1105 was going to have a hard time to pass as a ‘stand-alone-bill’ and tacking it onto the military reauthorization bill would force President Bush to veto the entire reauthorization act in order to veto the hate crimes component.   As of this writing there are 147 amendments to the Defense Reauthorization bill.  They will not all be debated, but the Kennedy Amendment most definitely will be!   Currently there is not a copy of the amendment online.

Yesterday I was in Washington, DC attending a news conference and rally in opposition to S1105, the 'Matthew Shepherd Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007.'  Afterwards members of the Philadelphia Eleven and I visited the offices of Senator Casey and Senator Specter. After they told their stories of the arrests on October 10, 2004, I gave the Senator’s staff member we met with a copy of our petition opposing S1105 along with the names of over 800 Pennsylvanians who had signed the petition.  (We have received more names since then and I will fax those names to the Senators’ offices.)

I’m not sure we made any head-way, but the Senators knew that Pennsylvanians were ‘in town’ opposing the bill.  Senator Casey’s office especially expressed disbelief that we were all from Pennsylvania even after we offered to show them our driver’s licenses!

Unfortunately, even as we were meeting with staffers from Casey’s and Specter’s offices, shenanigans were going on in the United States Senate!  Senator Ted Kennedy and Senator Gordon Smith (R-Oregon) were busy filing the hate crimes bill as an amendment to the Defense Reauthorization bill!  (In 2005 this is how the U.S. House got it passed!  They attached it to the Children Safety Act of 2005!)   They are at it again!

So . . . now the Hate Crimes bill is Amendment # 2067 (the Kennedy Amendment) to H.R. 1585 (the Defense Reauthorization Bill).

Yesterday, the Human Rights Campaign, the largest homosexual group in the nation, along with ‘clergy against hate’ ran a full page ad in Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper.  Click here to view the ad.

They also have the signatures of 1,300 clergy members on a letter supporting the hate crimes bill.  Following are the Pennsylvania clergy members who signed onto the letter.  Do you know any of them? I recognize at least one Metropolitan Community Church leader.

The Hate Crimes bill is unnecessary: the underlying offense is already fully and aggressively prosecuted in all 50 States. FBI statistics show that the incidence of hate crimes has actually declined over the last ten years.

AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

June 26, 2007

1.)  Update on H.B. 288

2.)  S.B 137 – Initiative and Referendum bill

1.)  H.B. 288— as of Friday, June 22 this bill was taken off the calendar and won’t be debated further until this fall. Thanks to all who called and e-mailed Harrisburg! Remember this was the bill that would have required all hospitals in PA to offer not only information about ‘emergency contraception’ including Plan B to rape victims but to offer the drugs themselves. Supporters of this bill claim that Plan B is not an abortifacient, but the manufacturer and FDA disagree. Note below:

FYI -- "Plan B," is manufactured by Duramed, which is a subsidiary of Barr Pharmaceuticals. Duramed's "Plan B" website states the following:

"Emergency contraceptives are not effective if the
woman is already pregnant. Plan B is believed to act
as an emergency contraceptive principally by
preventing ovulation or fertilization (by altering tubal
transport of sperm and/or ova). In addition, it may
inhibit implantation
(by altering the endometrium). It
is not effective once the process of implantation has]
begun.
(emphasis added)

Additionally, in the FDA’s Q and A section on Plan B, the following appears:

How does Plan B work?

Plan B works like other birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. Plan B acts primarily by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation). It may prevent the union of sperm and egg (fertilization). If fertilization does occur, Plan B may prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the womb (implantation). If a fertilized egg is implanted prior to taking Plan B, Plan B will not work. (emphasis added)

Why has the Marriage Protection Amendment (MPA) not been placed before the people of Pennsylvania to vote on it? Because the PA Constitution says we must wait on legislators to pass it during two consecutive legislative sessions. Most other states that have been able to vote on a MPA have the ability to gather names on a petition and if the required total is reached and certified, then force the constitutional amendment on the ballot to allow the voters to decide what the definition of marriage will be in their state. This process is called initiative and referendum.

We all know what happened in Harrisburg last June – the MPA overwhelmingly passed in the State House, but in the Senate Judiciary Committee Senator Jane Earll introduced a weakening amendment. With the help of then Senate Pro-Tempore Robert Jubilier (an ex-officio member on all committees), the weakened amendment passed in the Judiciary Committee. This negated the whole process because time constraints would not permit further action to reconcile the two bills.

S.B. 137 would change all that – permitting initiative and referendum in Pennsylvania, thus by-passing the legislators in Harrisburg. S.B. 137 actually is a bill proposing a constitutional amendment allowing the voters to decide if they want to change Article XI in the Pennsylvania Constitution.

Initiative and Referendum would place power back into the hands of the people and issues such as term limits, school choice, spending caps, tort reform and the Marriage Protection Amendment would be able to "see the light of day." Also, note that only a maximum of four initiatives could be placed before the people during any one election.

This bill is currently in the Senate State Government Committee and Senator Jeff Piccola will be introducing strengthening amendments before the anticipated vote on Wednesday, June 27th.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.) Contact the members of the Senate State Government Committee and ask them to vote ‘yes’ on S.B. 137 WITH the strengthening Piccola amendments. Click here for members of the State Government Committee or use the information below:

1.)    On June 6 H.B. 288 was re-committed to the House Rules Committee.  This bill would require hospitals and other emergency facilities to ‘promptly’ provide victims of sexual assault with information about “emergency contraceptives” including Plan B.  Hospitals are also to readily supply the regimen of emergency contraceptives.  One thing this bill does not require is for the hospital to report the sexual assault.  Other violent crimes must be reported to law enforcement.

The bill also says a non-profit chosen by the Department of Health will develop and provide the ‘medically and factually accurate” information. It also says that the non-profit shall be “the prime grantee that arranges for the provision of services to sexual violence and rape victims.”   I wonder which non-profit the Department of Health will choose?  Planned Parenthood??

2.)    President Bush has nominated Dr. Alan Holsinger, Jr. to be the nation’s next Surgeon General . . . homosexual activists are not pleased!  On January 14, 1991 Dr. Holsinger wrote a paper entitled “Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality.”   It was prepared for the Committee to Study Homosexuality of the United Methodist Church of which he was a member.   Click here to read the report . . . but be forewarned, it’s pretty gross.  Apparently homosexual activists are afraid that the truth about the dangers of their lifestyle will get out if Dr. Holsinger is confirmed for this position.    It would destroy their assertion that this quest for ‘rights’ is a civil rights issue.   Will an eight page report written 16 years ago derail his nomination?

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact your State House member and ask him or her to vote against H.B. 288.  Click here to find your member.  You can enter your county or nine-digit zip code in the upper right hand corner.

2.)  Contact Senators Specter and Casey and ask them to give Dr. Holsinger fair consideration as the nominee for Surgeon General.   Click here for Senator Casey’s contact information.  Senator Specter’s can be found here.  Also, contact President Bush and encourage him to stand by Dr. Holsinger’s nomination and not to be swayed by the distortions and lies of homosexual activists.  Call 202-456-1111 or -1414;  or e-mail: comments@whitehouse.gov  or www.whitehouse.gov/contact

3.)  Contact Mayor John Street’s Chief of Staff Joyce Wilkerson and express concern that the City is evicting the Boy Scouts.  Call (215) 686-7508.  Click here to read a news release issued earlier.

Homosexual Special Rights Bill Introduced in Harrisburg

Today a so-called ‘non-discrimination’ bill was introduced in the State House that would give special rights to homosexuals.  They deny this is a special rights bill, but since when did the sexual activity in which you engage warrant you recognition in state law? (Unless it’s illegal activity like rape, prostitution, etc.)

Click here to read the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review story.

Earlier today the AFA of PA issued a news release concerning the introduction of this bill.  Click here to read it.

There have been attempts to add this terminology to Pennsylvania law since 2004.

We need simply look at Philadelphia to see what can happen if ‘sexual orientation’ is added to ordinances or laws . . .  they are kicking the Boy Scouts out of their headquarters because they ban open homosexuals as Scout leaders.

Additionally, if this newly introduced bill is passed it will force Christian landlords to rent to homosexuals and Christian employers to hire homosexuals . . . if it’s like the Senate version, churches are not exempt!  Click here to read SB 761, which was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 12.

Also, I will be on WYOU Channel 22 – Scranton/Wilkes Barre tonight at 11:00 p.m. to discuss the introduction of this bill.  If you are in the viewing area, please tune in.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  If your State Senator is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, please contact him or her and ask that they vote ‘NO’ on SB 761.  Click here to see who’s on that committee.

2.)  Please contact your State Representative and ask him or her not to support the so-called anti-discrimination bill that was introduced by Representative Dan Frankel today.

Click here for contact info – if you do not know who your State Representative is, enter your nine-digit zip code in the upper right hand corner of that page.

Governor Rendell’s Budget – Will it Continue Funding Pro-Homosexual Event Equality Forum?

As legislators continue debating Governor Rendell’s $27.3 billion budget, the AFA of PA today contacted all the State Representatives and State Senators asking them to further defund the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED).  Why?  Because they continue giving grant money to the homosexual organization Equality Forum.  Click here to read the news release.

Using the Right to Know Law the AFA of PA has uncovered the fact that we, as taxpayers, have paid Equality Forum $275,000 since 2003!    This money has been given them through DCED grants for Tourist Product Development, Employment & Community Conservation and Community Revitalization Assistance.   The money has been used to help finance their annual week-long event – which includes activities such as panel discussions on same-sex unions, homosexual parenting, LGBT networking in Hollywood and ‘Being Out and Open in the Work Place.”   Click here to read the entire schedule.  I don’t know how these activities fall under tourism development or community conservation or revitalization.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia have both listed as sponsors for the past several years.  So, if you live in Philadelphia, you get to pay twice!

If Governor Rendell’s new budget is approved as is, taxpayers will be asked to pay a 7% sales tax instead of 6%, increased fees for motor vehicles and driver’s licenses, and the possibility of a 12.5 cent per gallon gas tax.  Additionally, employers who do not offer workers health insurance will be forced to pay a 3 percent payroll tax

As of April 30, the Revenue Department says, the state had collected $22.8 billion in sales, income, corporate and other taxes.

$275,000 may be a ‘drop in the bucket,’ but where should the budget cuts begin?  Should we be forced to fund an organization whose sole purpose is to undermine traditional values and redefine marriage and family?

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact your State Senator and your State Representative and ask them to restrict the money in the 2008 budget that the DCED can use for grants.   We do not want our tax dollars to be used to fund Equality Forum or any other homosexual event.

Click here for contact information for both of your state elected officials.   Key in your county or nine-digit zip code in the upper right hand corner.

May 14, 2007

1.)  Don’t Forget to Vote Tomorrow

2.)  Effort to Silence the Grassroots Begins in the U.S. House

3.)  Thank Congressman Christopher Carney for voting ‘NO’ on the hate crimes bill

2.) In January the Senate effort to silence the grassroots went down in flames. But on May 1, 2007 Congressman Martin Meehan (D-MA)- introduced H.R. 2093 which is an amendment to the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995. This is supposed to require additional reporting for lobbying firms. Sounds good . . . except read this: "`For purposes of a lobbying firm only, the term `lobbying activities' includes paid communications campaigns to influence the general public to lobby Congress."

Click here to read the bill.

Thus, in the sight of Congressman Meehan and Congressman Christopher Shays (D-CT), the co-sponsors of this bill, when the AFA of PA contacts you and you respond by contacting your Congressman you are in fact lobbying! In essence this bill redefines the words ‘lobbying’ and ‘lobbying firm.’

Last week the AFA of PA signed onto a letter asking members of Congress to reject H.R. 2093 – the Meehan Amendment. This letter was signed by a far ranging group of organizations from both the right and left. Click here to read the letter.

Mark-up on this bill in the House Judiciary Committee is scheduled for Thursday, May 17th. There are no Pennsylvania Congressmen who are members of this committee. Click here to view the list of members.

Please contact your Congressman and ask him or her to vote "NO’ on H.R. 2093 if it reaches the floor of the U.S. House. This bill infringes on the First Amendment right of free speech by attempting to regulate the speech of ordinary citizens who are speaking on public policy issues.

3.) Congressman Christopher Carney was the only Democrat representing Pennsylvania who voted against H.R. 1592 – the hate crimes bill. Even though the bill passed, he made the right call and withstood pressure from the Democratic leadership to support it. He deserves our thanks.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.) Please call your Congressman and ask him or her to vote ‘NO’ on H.R. 2093 if it reaches the floor of the U.S. House. Part of democracy is being able to contact one’s elected officials about an issue, it is not lobbying. This bill is an effort to silence the grassroots, by prohibiting pro-family and pro-life organizations from contacting YOU without filing burdensome reports. Click here for your Congressman’s contact information.

2.) Please contact Congressman Christopher Carney – even if he is not your Congressman— and thank him for voting ‘NO’ on the hate crimes bill. It took a lot of courage for a freshman Congressman to go against the ‘advice’ of the Democratic leadership. Click here for his contact information.

The National Day of Prayer is the Target Date for Vote on Hate Crimes Bill!

Tomorrow is the National Day of Prayer.  I hope your community has activities planned to spend time in prayer seeking the face of God through these troubling times.

The Democrats have also scheduled the vote on H.R. 1592—the Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 – for tomorrow!  The AFA of PA has just finished faxing a letter to all 19 Congressmen in Washington, D.C. who represent Pennsylvania.  This letter was signed by Pennsylvania pro-family leaders and pastors from across the state.

Please, if you have not contacted your Congressman . . .  they need to hear from every concerned Pennsylvanian.  This bill is a matter of creating a special class and giving special protections to a group of people simply because of the sexual activity in which they engage.  It has nothing to do with civil rights and everything to do with silencing those who oppose the homosexual lifestyle.  For a reminder, you can still read the Philadelphia Eleven story and view the video of their  arrest on our website

Consider:

The Hate Crimes bill is unnecessary: the underlying offense is already fully and aggressively prosecuted in all 50 States. FBI statistics show that the incidence of hate crimes has actually declined over the last ten years.

Remember the debate last week in the House Judiciary Committee?

On April 25th, during mark-up on H.R. 1592, Congressman Louis Gohmert asked, “If a minister was giving a sermon, a Bible study or any kind of written or spoken message saying that homosexuality was a serious sin and a person in the congregation went out and committed a crime against a homosexual would the minister be charged with the crime of incitement?”

Congressman Gohmert was attempting to clarify and emphasize that the legislation would have an effect on the constitutional right to religious freedom.   Meanwhile the Democrats continued to explain why they could not accept Congressman Mike Pence’s amendment to H.R. 1592 that would protect religious freedom.    Congressman Lungren continuously shot down their answer.  He said, “What is your answer?  Would there be incitement charges against the pastor?”

And finally Democrat Congressman Artur Davis from Alabama spoke up and said, “Yes.”

 ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact your Congressman in the District Office nearest you and ask him or her to vote 'No' on H.R. 1592.  Phone calls are essential!  Use the bulleted items above as Talking Points.  If you are in Congressman Chris Carney’s district – please call him as he appears to” be sitting on the fence”  and could go either way.

FA of PA ACTION ALERT

April 26, 2007

1.)    Hate (Thought) Crimes Bill Headed to Vote in Full House

2.)    FYI -- Philly Flagged

1.)    Yesterday Republicans in the Judiciary Committee offered 25 amendments to H.R. 1592 –  some of the amendments offered were to

a.)     add unborn and partially born babies as a protected class

b.)    add military personnel as a protected class

c.)    add senior citizens as a protected class

d.)    add the homeless as a protected class

e.)    add pregnant women as a protected class

Amendments were also offered to protect religious freedom and to remove ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity.’

 All amendments were defeated.

“Sexual orientation” is not defined in the bill and the Democrats did not want it defined!  “Gender identity’ is defined as such “for the purposes of this chapter means actual or perceived gender-related characteristics.”  So . . . what does that mean?

Please read Sec. 7, Sec. 249 (b) “Certification Requirement.”  Is (2) (D) under “Certification Requirement” saying that if the state’s verdict and sentence is not good enough in the eyes of the federal government, that individual can be re-prosecuted for the same crime?  Isn’t this called ‘double jeopardy’ – there’s a law against that!

2.)    On April 18th thirty-six permanent rainbow street signs were unveiled in Philadelphia. In the picture at the end of this e-mail, City Councilman Frank DiCicco addresses the ones on hand to witness the unveiling.  Mayor John Street was also there to take part.   These signs designate the area from Chestnut to Pine Streets between 11th and Broad Streets as a ‘gay’ village.  Philadelphia joins San Francisco, Chicago, Montreal, and Toronto in erecting permanent rainbow installations designating predominately homosexual areas.

Why is Philadelphia doing this?  To ‘reach out’ to the homosexual tourist!
Apparently Philadelphia and Mayor Street don’t care that much about the tourist
dollars from those who hold traditional values.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  H.R. 1592 is expected to be voted on in the full House on Monday, April 30th.   Please call your Congressman again and ask him to vote against H.R. 1592.   Click here for contact information.  : Click here for talking points.

2.)  Please consider contacting the office of Philadelphia Mayor John Street and express your concern that the City of Philadelphia has turned its back on the majority of Pennsylvanians as they cater to those involved in the homosexual lifestyle.  Mayor Street’s Executive Secretary, Betty Kibler, can be reached at (215) 686-2181.

Federal Hate Crimes Bills on Fast Track

Hate crimes legislation in Washington, D.C. is on a fast track and looks like it will be passed soon.  There are currently three bills being considered that would add ‘actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity’ to federal statues that would increase the penalty of a perpetrator if it is determined that their thoughts were ‘hate-filled’ when they were committing the crime.   Thus these bills could easily be called ‘thought crime’ bills.  See end of this alert for bill numbers/names and some talking points.  Please consider contacting your U.S. Senator and U.S. Congressman and ask them to vote against these bills.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact Senators Specter and Casey – both have indicated they will vote for S. 1105.  Please ask them to oppose S. 1105.

Senator Casey:  202.224.6324 – D.C.;  Harrisburg District Office Phone: (717) 231-7540 or toll Free: (866) 461-9159

e-mail using form at http://www.casey.senate.gov/contact.cfm

Click here for contact information for Senator Specter.

2.)  Ask your Congressman to oppose H.R. 1592 (this bill is scheduled for committee mark-up on Wednesday).  Click here for contact information. If you don’t know who your Congressman is, please go to www.house.gov and key in your nine-digit zip code in the upper left hand corner.

Studies show that phone calls are much more effective than e-mails.  Phone calls to district offices tend to make a greater impact because they are not used to receiving any volume of calls.  Feel free to use the following talking points.

TALKING POINTS:

In the U.S. House:

H.R. 254 – David Ray Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007' or `David's Law'

H.R. 1592 -- Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention Act of 2007

In the U.S. Senate:

S. 1105 --  Matthew Shepherd Act

Two Embryonic Stem Cell Bills

The U.S. Senate began debate on two embryonic stem cell bills today -- S 5, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act and S. 30, the HOPE Act.  Senators Reid and Harkin have introduced S. 5 which is the same bill that passed Congress last year and was vetoed by the President.  He has indicated he will again veto it if it reaches his desk.  A similar bill has already passed the House and if S 5 passes, the two bills will then go to a conference committee to work out the differences.

Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota has introduced S 30 which would permit experimentation on ‘naturally dead’ human embryos.  Is experimentation on even a dead human embryo a good idea?

Under a unanimous consent agreement, there will 20 hours of debate on these two proposals.  The AFA of PA strongly opposes S 5 and is neutral on S 30.

Senator Bob Casey has indicated he will vote against S 5.  Senator Specter is a co-sponsor of the bill.

Federal law does not prohibit embryonic stem cell research.  Since 2001 $130 million taxpayer dollars have been spent on research involving stem cell lines created prior to August 9, 2001.  This research has been done without encouraging the destruction of human embryos.   Additionally millions of private dollars have been spent on research on embryonic stem cells - - - all to no avail.

Twenty-five years of embryonic stem cell research has not produced any cures, while adult stem cells have been used successfully in treating over seventy diseases.  Click here to read an adult and embryonic stem cell research comparison.   Why head down ‘bunny trails’ with embryonic stem cell research that has only produced tumors in patients and not one cure.  Quick and reliable help for patients should be the highest priority for researchers.

At the end of this alert are several talking points.

ACTION NEEDED:

The vote may come tomorrow, if you have not called Senators Casey and Specter, please consider doing so.

q     Call Senator Casey and encourage him to stand by his recent statements that he will vote against S 5.  You can call him at his Harrisburg district office (717) 231-7540 or his D.C. office (202) 224-6324.

q     Call Senator Specter and ask him to vote ‘no’ on S 5.  Funding adult stem cell research will be much more beneficial to patients.  Click here for his phone numbers.

TALKING POINTS:

1.)  S. 5 is a deceptive bait-and-switch.  S.5 purports to fund research only    on so-called "leftover" or "discarded" IVF embryos. HOWEVER, there are not enough "leftover" frozen embryos to meet scientists' already-stated demands for huge number of embryos for experiments.

2.)    Creating embryos solely for experiments (create and clone) will require massive donations of women's eggs, exploiting women's bodies as raw material for experiments and potentially putting women's health in harms way.

3.)    Human embryonic stem cell research is legal, but S.5 would divert taxpayer funds from more promising and less controversial research such as adult and cord blood stem cell research that is already treating patients. Ethical adult and cord blood stem cells are already improving patient health, without harming the stem cell donor and without the need to create and destroy a human embryo.  Adult stem cells from babies, teenagers, and adults, as well as from umbilical cord blood, are already helping human patients for over 70 different diseases and injuries.

Allegheny College Set to Host Second Annual LGBT Colloquium

Unfortunately, this is not just a United Methodist problem, but we see the acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle creeping into and in some cases barreling into many church denominations.    Scripture is clear on how God views homosexual acts – they are sin as are lying, cheating, adultery, etc.  On my radio program yesterday I interviewed Dr. Rob Gagnon, Associate Professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.   You can check his website out here.

Please consider contacting Dr. Richard Cook, President of Allegheny College, and express your concern about their apparent acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle.  This is not a matter of so-called tolerance, but a matter of what does the Bible say about sin and how will a church-related college respond to Biblical truth.  Click here to read the news release issued earlier today.

Click here to read the schedule for the upcoming activities at the Second Annual LGBT Colloquium. Especially note the two LGBT activism sessions.

If you attend a United Methodist Church, you may want to let your pastor know what is taking place at Allegheny College.    Does your church help support Allegheny College?

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Please contact President Cook by e-mail at rcook@allegheny.edu or by phone at 814. 332-5380.

1.)    Senate Resolution for Mandatory Mental Health Screening

2.)    Bill to Require Insurance Companies to Pay for HPV Vaccinations

3.)    Anti-Bullying Bill Passes in the PA Senate

1.)  Senate Resolution 48 was introduced on March 12, 2007 and referred to the Senate
Aging and Youth Committee.  We have it from a good source that the Chairman of this
Committee, Senator Patricia Vance, will take steps to see it doesn’t get out of committee.
Part of it states, “RESOLVED, That the Senate find that every child should be screened
for mental illness once in their youth in order to identify mental illness and prevent suicide
among youths and that the screening and identification process should employ evidence-
based initiatives . . . .”

Resolutions, unlike bills, when passed are non-binding, but send the message that the issue addressed is supported by the legislative body.

We do not need mandatory mental health screening for school students.  This is being pushed by the creators of Teen Screen and the pharmaceutical companies.

Here’s more information:

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette-- September 18, 2005

Click here to read a February 9, 2007 article from Ed Watch.

2.)  H.B. 352 which would require insurance companies to pay for HPV vaccinations for individuals between the ages of 11 and 27 was introduced on February 9, 2007 and was referred to the Insurance Committee.  Other bills are expected to be introduced in the future.  On March 7th Representative Julie Harhart began circulating a “Memo” asking for sponsors on a bill that also provides for insurance companies to cover FDA approved HPV vaccines when prescribed by a physician.  It would not permit vaccines to be administered to minors under the age of 18 without written parental consent.  And remember Representative Babette Josephs “Memo.”  Click here to review our February 20th Action Alert.

For more information, click here to read an HPV Fact Sheet.

3.)  S.B. 71 – An Anti-bullying bill passed the State Senate on March 12th by a vote of 42 – 6.  Click here for the Roll Call.  It has been referred to the House Education Committee.  This bill requires all schools to establish bullying policies and to provide the Office of Safe Schools with a copy of their policy.  These policies may include prevention, intervention and education programs.   Even though the words ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity’ are not specified in this version of the bill, it will be the method used by GLSEN, PFLAG and other pro-homosexual organizations to get their material into Pennsylvania schools.

Besides don't parents and the local school board care enough about their students that they don't require a state mandate?

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  If your State Senator is a member of the Senate Aging and Youth Committee, please contact him or her and ask for a ‘no’ vote on Resolution 48, if it comes before the Committee for a vote.

2.)  Click here for members of the House Insurance Committee.  Much misinformation is out there concerning the purpose and the effectiveness of Gardasil, currently the only FDA-approved HPV vaccine.  Even if your State Representative is NOT listed, please contact him or her and ask that they review the facts listed in the HPV Fact Sheet.   You can e-mail them this link. http://www.afaofpa.org/hpv_fact_sheet.pdf

3.)  Members of the House Education Committee can be found by clicking here.   If your State Representative is listed, please contact him or her and ask them to vote ‘No’ on S.B. 71.  Please let them know of the inherent dangers of passing such a bill.

1.)    Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Calls Homosexual Acts Immoral

2.)    Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy Upsets Homosexual Groups

3.)    FYI – HPV Fact Sheet now online.  Click here

1.) Yesterday in an interview with the Chicago Tribune, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine General Peter Pace, called homosexual acts immoral and said homosexuals should not be permitted to serve openly in the military.

"I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts.   I do not believe the United States is well served by a policy that says it is OK to be immoral in any way," Pace told the newspaper.

Let’s face it, in years gone by he would have been applauded, but not in today’s society.  Homosexual activists and some members of Congress have called for an apology.   In fact Rep. Martin Meehan, D-Mass., has introduced legislation (H.R.1246) to reverse the military's ban on homosexuals openly serving.  Meehan said in response to General Pace’s statement, “General Pace's statements aren't in line with either the majority of the public or the military.  He needs to recognize that support for overturning (the policy) is strong and growing . . . “

In a statement released today General Pace says he regrets the statement, but will not apologize.   He will continue being under intense pressure to issue a formal apology.  He needs to hear from us!

2.)  Just another example of how intolerant homosexuals are:  Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy will be the honored guest next Tuesday at a fund-raising banquet for the Indiana Family Institute.  Homosexual groups are upset because of his attendance and support of a group that believes in one-man, one-woman marriage and opposes homosexual adoption.    Coach Dungy will be under pressure for the next week to not attend the banquet.  Why not drop him a line of encouragement. NOTE:  The above linked page may be offensive to some.

PA Human Relations Chair Calls Same-sex Marriage the ‘Only Real Protection” and Says PA Hate Crimes Law is a ‘National Model’

On Saturday March 3, Stephen Glassman, Chairman of the PA Human Relations Commission (PHRC) was the keynote speaker at the “Get Busy, Get Equal Conference” in Harrisburg.  This is a continuing trend of pushing homosexual rights on the rest of Pennsylvania.  As the AFA of PA has said in the past, Glassman is using his position as Chairman of the PHRC as a bully pulpit to further his agenda.

Stephen Glassman was first appointed as a PHRC commissioner by Governor Mark Schweiker in 2002.  When Governor Rendell won his bid for governor and was sworn in in 2003, he ‘promoted’ Glassman to the chairmanship.  He received unanimous Senate confirmation in 2002!

As Glassman’s five-year term ends this year, please contact your Senator and Governor Rendell and express your concerns.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact your State Senator and express concerns that Stephen Glassman is using his position to further a personal agenda and does not have the best interest of all Pennsylvanians in mind.  Click here to find your State Senator and contact information.  Key in your nine-digit zip code in the upper right hand corner.

March 2, 2007

Three Pro-Homosexual Bills  – two likely to easily pass

1.)    H.R 254 – Federal Hate Crimes Law Reintroduced in Congress

2.)    H.R.1246--  to allow open homosexuals to serve in military

3.)    ENDA or Employment Non-Discrimination Act if passed will give homosexuals and transgenders special work place protections

1.)  On January 5, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), introduced the Anti-Defamation League’s federal hate crimes bill into the House of Representatives – H.R. 254.   This is the same hate bill she introduced two years ago, which was passed by the House in the fall 2005.   (Five Pennsylvania Congressmen voted for the Conyers hate crimes amendment to the Children Safety Act of 2005.  They were Congressman Charlie Dent, Congressman Michael Fitzpatrick, Congressman Jim Gerlach, Congressman Todd Russell Platts and Congressman Curt Weldon.  For more details read the AFA of PA news release by clicking here.

Previously called The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, it is now The David Ray Hate Crimes Prevention Act, in memory of a Texan adolescent brutally sodomized with a metal pipe.  Click here to read HR 254.  (key in H.R. 254 in the search window.)  It has currently been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.

Here are some examples of ‘hate speech’:  in Canada and France both, legislators have been fined for publicly criticizing homosexuality. Three years ago, a Swedish hate crimes law was used to put Pastor Ake Green, who preached that homosexuality is a sin, in jail for a month. In 2004 eleven Christians in Philadelphia faced hate crime charges for reading Scripture and singing choruses at a homosexual event.  Click here to read their story.  And right now the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in California is trying to determine whether “natural family” is hate speech!

2.)  On February 28th Congressman Marty Meehan (D-Massachusetts) said he would introduce a bill that would repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”  The Military Readiness Enhancement Act would allow homosexuals to openly serve in the military and it would specifically authorize anyone separated for homosexuality, bisexuality or homosexual conduct to be allowed back into the military if they wish.  The bill has 109 co-sponsors, including three Republicans.   It was referred to the House Committee on Armed Services.

Note:  On February 27th a nine-member military jury found Air Force Captain Devery L. Taylor guilty of raping four of his fellow service men.  Military prosecutors described Taylor, 38, as a serial rapist who met men in bars, spiked their drinks with the "date-rape" GHB, and kidnapped them.

Taylor was charged with two counts of attempted sodomy, four counts of forcible sodomy, two counts of kidnapping and one count of unlawful entry.  The following day he was discharged from the Air Force and sentenced to 50 years in prison.

3.)  The Employment Non-Discrimination Act or ENDA does not have language finalized yet, but openly homosexual Congressman Barney Frank, D-Mass., said the version he is helping draft will also cover transgender employees.  In the past he has always refused to support any version of ENDA which included ‘gemder identity’ because he knew radical transgenders would push the workplace bathroom and shower useage issue.  Frank still recognizes the problem exists because he states his language will offer some allowances to employers so they can enforce dress codes and minimize controversies over bathroom use.  What allowances would protect employers from lawsuits from men who thiink they are women and want to use the women’s restroom or in so workplaces the women’s shower?   To say the least, it will ‘open a can of worms.”

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)    Both sides expect the Hate Crimes Bill – HR 254 -- and ENDA to pass.  Contact your Congressman and ask him or her to vote ‘No’ on H.R. 254 and H.R.1246 Representative Meehan’s Military Readiness Enhancement Act.  Click here to find your Congressman.  Key in your nine-digit zip code.

2.)    We’ll keep you posted on the ENDA situation as it advances.

3.)    Pray for American as you’ve never prayed before!

NOTE:  late afternoon on February 20 Merck announced it will no longer lobby for state's to make their HPV vaccination mandatory.  But what happens in the 49 state capitols where "HPV vaccination action" has begun?  Here's the AP article.

AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

February 20, 2007

HPV Vaccination to Become Mandatory in PA?

Have you noticed a proliferation in talk about the HPV vaccination and cervical cancer?  On February 2nd Texas Governor Rick Perry bypassed the legislators and signed an executive order mandating that all girls entering sixth grade in 2008 must have the HPV vaccination.  Turns out ‘Women in Government’ has been working hand in hand with the pharmaceutical company Merck to get legislators to introduce bills in their respective state capitols.   Merck is hiring lobbyists in each state and will probably earn $1 billion annually by getting states to mandate the HPV vaccination.  Thus far they have been successful in some type action in all states except South Dakota.  Click here to view the map from Women in Government.

Here in Pennsylvania, HR 21 passed in the State House on January 29 – this was a resolution setting aside January 21-27  for “Cervical Cancer Awareness Week in Pennsylvania,” but the HPV vaccination is also mentioned in the resolution!   View the resolution here

Also on February 12, Representative Babette Josephs (D-Philadelphia) began circulating a “Dear Colleague Memo” asking for co-sponsors to a bill that would require girls entering sixth grade to bring a letter from their physician stating that the girl’s parents have received information about HPV and cervical cancer and the girl has either received the HPV vaccination or the parents have decided to opt out.

Click here to read the statement from the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons.

According to the PA Department of Health the four common cancers in Pennsylvania are Female Breast, Bronchus and Lung, Prostate, Colon and Rectum and Urinary Bladder.

In 2003, there were 510 cases of invasive cervical cancer in Pennsylvania.  Additionally, according to 2004 data, 154 deaths occurred due to cervical cancer (Source: Department of Health Bureau of Health Statistics and Research).  The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 310 new cases of cervical cancer in Pennsylvania in 2006.

Any death due to cancer is a tragedy . . .  but should this warrant a state mandated vaccination for a sexually transmitted disease be given to 11 and 12 year old girls??    Please let you State Representative know of your concerns.

Some additional facts and talking points from Michigan that we could use here in Pennsylvania:

1)                    The only way to get HPV is by sexual intercourse. HPV cannot be transmitted without sexual activity and does not constitute a public health threat.  All other mandated vaccines covered easily communicable diseases. What precedent does this set?

2)                    Why are our legislators targeting 11 year-olds for a sexually transmitted disease? Current laws make it illegal for girls to have sex before the age of 16.

3)                    The common Pap Smear is highly effective in detecting abnormalities that lead to cervical cancer. Gardasil vaccination does not eliminate the need for regular pap smears.

4)                    Cervical cancer causes approximately one percent (0.77%) of all cancer deaths in America. (There were 154 Pennsylvania deaths from cervical cancer in 2004.)

5)                    It takes between 8.1 and 12.6 years to develop cervical cancer. Merck testing of Gardasil was only 4 years among 25,000 subjects, far less than the average time lapse needed to develop the cancer.

6)                    The average age of a woman that develops cervical cancer is 48 years of age. Will a vaccine administered at the age of 11 be effective 37 years into the future?

7)                    Of the more than 25,000 total individuals tested, less than 2,000 girls aged 9 to 15 years were included in clinical trials.

8)                    Actual costs for the HPV vaccine are running above the estimate of $360.00; some as high as $900 for the three shot series. In addition girls and women must have a pregnancy test before each vaccine per Merck recommendations against vaccinating pregnant women. Presumably this vaccine could be harmful to the unborn.

9)                    Since boys are the “donors” of the HP Virus to the girls, how long will it be until a forced vaccination of boys will be enacted?

10)                Mandating of this vaccine is opposed by the American Academy of  Pediatrics, the Texas Medical Association, and the Catholic Medical Association.

11)                Just because medication is approved by the FDA it doesn’t mean it is safe for all persons.  Remember VIOXX

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Please contact your State Representative and ask him or her not to sign on as a co-sponsor of the HPV Vaccination bill to be introduced by Representative Josephs.  Click here and key in your nine-digit zip code or county in the upper right hand corner to find your State Representative.

2.)  The HPV vaccination and the ramifications of a state mandate will be the topic of discussion on American Family Focus on PA Issues this week.  My guest is Fran Bevan, president of the Pennsylvania Eagle Forum and a Certified Medical Technologist.  The program will air Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. on WAWN 89.5 FM in Franklin and Saturday at 4:00 p.m. on WTMV 88.5 in Youngsville.  Beginning tomorrow evening it can be heard on our website by clicking here.

AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

February 1, 2007

1.)    Did Congressman Pelosi Tell the Capitol Police to Ignore Anti-War Protesters?

2.)Philadelphia to be ‘Flagged” with Rainbow Flags!

3.)    “American Family Focus on PA Issues” Can Now Be Heard Online

1.)    Last Saturday thousands of anti-war demonstrators descended on Washington, D.C.  The Capitol Police, whose job is to protect the U.S. Capitol grounds, stepped back and permitted about 300 protestors to not only ascend the Capitol steps, but to spray paint them with anti-war and anarchist symbols. According to The Hill, the protesters were allowed to take the Capitol steps and began to spray-paint "anarchist symbols" and phrases such as "Our capitol building" and "You can't stop us" around the area.
How could this happen?  According to the U.S. Code, "[I]f the damage exceeds $100, the defendant is subject to a fine of up to $250,000, ten years imprisonment, or both . . When property damage does not exceed $100, the offense is a misdemeanor by a fine of up to $100,000, one year imprisonment, or both."
It has also been reported that the rank and file members of the Capitol police are outraged that they were told by Chief of Police Philip Morse not to arrest anyone.  The Chief reports directly to Speaker of the House Pelosi!
At taxpayer expense, public employees came in the following day to clear up the defacement of federal property. property.
So was the Chief of Police acting on orders from Speaker Pelosi?  Contact her office and ask for a thorough investigation into the defacement of public property at the U.S. Capitol during last weekend’s anti-war protests.

2.)    The Philadelphia Gay Tourism Caucus (PGTC) plans on placing a rainbow flag stripe under the existing street signs in the “Gayborhood” in Philadelphia.  According to Tami Sortman, executive director of PGTC, This will be a big move forward for the gay community,” Sortman said. “People will know they can safely walk down the street holding their partner’s hand.”
This effort will be in conjunction with the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) campaign “Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay.”   The GPTMC 3-year-old $300.000 campaign began in December 2003.  The targeted area for ‘flagging’ will encompass the neighborhood from Pine and Chestnut streets and Broad and 11th streets.  ( Independence Hall is at the intersection of Third and Chestnut Streets.
These flags could not be placed beneath the existing signs without the approval of Mayor John Street and the City Council.   Quite obviously the City of Philadelphia is not targeting the majority of American tourists when they authorize such a campaign!
Earlier this month the Philadelphia Gay Tourism Caucus stated that they had received no negative feedback . . . perhaps we can change that!  Please contact Mayor Street.

3.)    My weekly 30-minute radio program can now be heard online by clicking here. Currently we will keep four weeks of programs available.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)    Contact Speaker Pelosi’s office and ask for a thorough investigation into last weekend’s defacement of the U.S. Capitol during the anti-war demonstrations.

2.)    Click here to e-mail  Mayor John Street  or call him at 215.686.2181. If you live in Philadelphia and do not know who your City Council Member is, then click here.  Once you have determined who your City Council member is, you can click on their name on the left sidebar for contact information.  Please ask them why they are more interested in catering to the homosexual tourists and, in turn, discouraging traditional families from visiting the historic sites that are near and dear to every patriotic American.  Is the City more interested in portraying itself as ‘gay friendly’ or a truly American city?

Dangerous Section Removed from S 1  - - - but it was close

On Thursday evening, the United States Senate passed, by a 55-43 margin, the Bennett amendment to strip Section 220 on grassroots lobbying from S 1.  Senator Bennett’s Amendment had 13 co-sponsors – none from Pennsylvania!   Senator Specter voted for the Bennett Amendment and one of Senator Casey’s first official votes as United States Senator from Pennsylvania was to vote against the Bennett Amendment.

The Senate then passed S 1 by a vote of 96 – 2 with Senator Hatch (R-UT) and Senator Coburn (R-OK) voting ‘No’ on the bill.  Senators Brownback (R-KS) and Johnson (D-SD) were listed as ‘Not Voting.”

The House will soon be introducing its own version of the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007.  Who knows what that will include!!  We’ll keep you posted.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact Senator Specter and tell him ‘thank you’ for supporting the Bennett Amendment to S. 1

AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

January 18, 2007

1.)    Update on S 1

2.)    Federal Hate Crimes Bill Has Been Reintroduced

1.)  Last night the Senate failed to invoke cloture on S. 1, the Lobbying Reform bill by a vote of 51-46.   S. 1 is sure to return after agreement is reached on the line item veto (an amendment Republicans wanted on the bill.)

Thanks for contacting Senators Specter and Casey!  BUT please contact them again as the vote may come up as soon as tomorrow.

Stay tuned in the coming days.  The grassroots lobbying provisions are set aside for now. . . . . but!

2.)  On January 5, Rep.

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Please again contact Senator Specter and Senator Casey and ask them not to support S 1 unless the Grassroots Lobbying Provisions – Section 220 -- has been removed:

2.)  Please contact your Congressman and ask him to vote against H.R. 254 when it comes to the floor of the House for a vote.  Click here for contact information.  If you do not know who your Congressman is, click here and enter your nine-digit zip code in the left hand corner.

Talking Points:

1.)    there is no need for hate crimes legislation . . .  FBI statistics do not support it

2.)    hate crimes legislation creates ‘thought police’ as law enforcement has to determine the thoughts of the perpetrator

3.)    hate crimes legislation creates special class of people with special protections.  i.e. a male homosexual who has been physically attacked would have greater protection under the law that a seven-year-old girl who has been brutally raped

4.)    There are already laws on the books to deal with the crimes outlined in H.R. 254

5.)    It is unequal protection under the law to have ‘enhanced sentencing’ under hate crimes laws

In Pennsylvania our rallying cry against this bill should be “Remember the Philadelphia Eleven!”

Remember our hate crimes law refers to violence and during the debate on the floor of the House in 2002 State Representatives said the hate crimes law was about hooligans and blood on the streets, not Sunday School teachers.  Click here for the quotes and additional information on hate crimes.

Click here for more information on the arrest of eleven Christians for reading Scripture and singing choruses at a homosexual event in 2004. They were each charged with hate crimes and faced 45 years in prison and up to $90,000 in fines.

AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

January 12, 2007

1.)    HR 3 – Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act Passes

2.)    S 1 -- Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007 – an amendment has been introduced that would strike Section 220 – the grassroots lobbying provision – from the bill

HR 3 -- Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act -- expansion of embryonic stem cell research -- passed the U.S. House by a vote of 253-174.  Only 5 out of 19 Congressmen representing Pennsylvania get it right!  Click here for the roll call vote. President Bush has promised to veto the bill, if it reaches his desk. The Democrats only picked up 15 additional votes since the November election . . . well short of the 290 that they would need to override President Bush's veto.  The bill now goes to the Senate.

Click here for more information on the successes of adult stem cells.

S 1 -- the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007 was introduced on January 4, 2007.  Its current form – Section 220 --  has provisions which would muzzle grassroots organizations with burdensome quarterly filing – including records of phone calls made, records of e-mails sent, financial expenditure when informing the grassroots on any issue, web hosting costs, etc.  There would be a $100,000 fine for knowingly filing an inaccurate report.  (more details contained after following paragraph)

Senator Robert Bennett (R-Utah) along with Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) two of the four Republican sponsors of S1 have introduced an amendment which would strike Section 220 – the grassroots lobbying provisions – from S 1.

MORE DETAILS:  This reporting requirement is triggered by two actions:  (1) a lobbying "contact" – a personal or written communication with an individual in the executive or legislative branch of the federal government concerning public policy issues, from legislation to nominations; and (2) communications with grassroots  (people like you) that "influence" them to contact the executive or legislative branches ("influence" is not defined, but it apparently doesn't even have to include a specific "call to action.")  There is no set minimum expenditure that would require this reporting – thus any expenditure would require this quarterly report.

The AFA of PA’s involvement with coalitions such as the Arlington Group, Third Branch Conference (judicial confirmation coalition) or any pro-life coalition would require they report our involvement.

The bill exempts larger organizations with paid lobbyists who don’t predominantly depend on communicating to the grassroots (you) via public communications.  Large corporations (which spend millions in lobbying expenses) would be exempt.  Communications aimed at an organization’s “members, employees, officers or shareholders” would be exempt.  That means that groups such as the AFL-CIO, MoveOn.org, National Education Association and other organized groups would be exempt.

The bill defines “grassroots lobbying firms” as any organization that encourages 500 or more members of the general public to contact Congress.

Your and my First Amendment rights and our right to petition the government are at stake!

ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact your Congressman about HR 3 and thank him for his ‘yes’ vote or, in case of a ‘no’ vote, ask him why he voted to destroy human embryos since adult stem cells can be ethically and have been successfully used.  Click here for contact information. If you don’t know who our Congressman is click here and key in your nine-digit zip code in the left hand corner.

2.)  Contact Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey, Jr. and ask them to support the Bennett Amendment to S 1 which would remove Section 220, the grassroots lobbying provision.

AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

January 10, 2007

First Action of U.S. Senate Is to Silence Grassroots Organizations

Democrats who are in control in the Senate are quickly moving to silence grassroots organizations.  Senate Bill 1 (S 1), also known as the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007 was introduced on January 4, 2007.  A nice sounding name but in the guise of lobbying reform, Senate Bill 1 does not address that issue.  What it will do is effectively silence organizations such as the American Family Association of Pennsylvania in its efforts to inform the voters of the actions of those who are elected to represent them.   The provisions apply to any organization which informs 500 people or more on issues.

The primary sponsor of the bill is Senator Harry Reid (D-NV).  Click here for a list of co-sponsors.  Unfortunately, as you can see, there are several Republicans who have signed on as co-sponsors:

Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

Trent Lott (R-MS)

Susan Collins (R-ME)

Robert Bennett (R-UT)

Click here to read S 1.  This bill should clamp down on highly paid lobbyists, but instead targets grassroots organizations.  It appears that 527 organizations and labor unions are exempt from the provisions of S 1. Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, has said the bill should be called ‘Silence the People Act of 2007.

Vote on the bill is scheduled for next Wednesday or Thursday (January 17th or 18th), but don’t wait to make those phone calls to protect your right to be informed on the issues.

ACTION NEEDED:

Contact Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey, Jr. and ask them to remove the ‘grassroots lobbying provisions’ of S 1.  Tell them this bill is outrageous and should concentrate on lobbying reform and not on organizations which inform the public of what is going on in Washington.  I would encourage you to e-mail and call the Senators at both their D.C. office and the district office nearest you.  D.C. offices are geared up to handle the calls from upset constituents more than district offices.  But one thing is for sure, district offices will contact their Senator’s D.C. office if they get even a dozen phone calls from constituents on a particular bill!  So . . .  call those district offices too.  Make sure you include the fact that you are a voter from Pennsylvania.

First Order of Business for New Congress is to Vote on Embryonic Stem Cell Research

The U.S. House, under the new leadership of Nancy Pelosi, will fast track legislation that will expand the use of taxpayer dollars in Embryonic Stem Cell Research (ESCR).  The vote on the DeGette/Castle Bill, H.R. 3 is scheduled for Thursday, January 11th

Current law funds research on 22 lines of embryonic stem cells that existed prior to August 9, 2001.   But the law does not permit federal funding be used to destroy additional embryonic stem cells.

Please contact your Congressman and ask him or her to vote “NO” on the Degette/Castle Bill or H.R. 3.

Remind your Congressman that adult stem cells have successfully been used in treating 72 diseases and embryonic stem cells have never been successful.  Adult stem cells are found in fatty tissue and bone marrow.   Stem cells are also found in umbilical cord blood and most recently discovered in amniotic fluid.   Click here for a comparison between adult stem cell and embryonic stem cell successes.

In October Professor James Sherley, a stem cell researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was in Australia to talk with lawmakers about why they should resist backing legislation promoting human cloning.   Sherley said that embryonic stem cells cause tumors and cancers when injected into human tissue and, as a result, they can't be used to treat patients with various diseases.

So, why use taxpayer dollars to destroy embryos and pursue research that has proven detrimental, when adult stem cells are readily available?
