Summer 2008 Continues Girl Scouts From the littlest Daisies to the mature Ambassadors, Girl Scouts are intent on converting their girl members into “agents of change and advocates.” The Girl Scouts’ new Girl Scout Leadership Experience is entitled “Journeys” and quite a journey the girls will take – hopefully all the way to Capitol Hill and beyond to the UNFPA, if the GS has their way. The first set of three Journeys are set to launch this summer and will affect virtually every age of program in the GS. The Journey curriculum set to be released this summer is entitled “It’s your world, Change it!” By review of this curriculum it seems building feminist change agents is the new mission of the age old scouts. Starting at the youngest level, “Kindergartners will meet flowers and critters who guide them to explore global diversity, botany, the environment and stewardship of the land, the young Brownies will discover Keys to Leadership and invited to “GO ELF” by Exploring, Linking arms and Flying into action”. The year is culminated in a “Take Action” Project. Soon 4-5th graders or Junior Girl Scouts will enjoy the Journey entitled “Agents of Change”, “girls will explore “real power – the power of one, the power of team and the power of community. Juniors create a circle of fun and friendship as they move from a deeper understanding of themselves to discover how powerful they are as a team to realizing the added strength they gain by reaching out to the wider community”. Fourth and fifth graders explore the “herstory” of heroines and use circles and ceremonies to experience the power of belonging and achieving in Girl Scouts. (Can we say magik???) A comic story (guided by Dez – the spider with an eye for fashion who narrates the entire journey) of Junior age girls who take action to improve their community”. And guess what? The girls get to wear “concentric circle badges to represent one of the powers they have discovered and explored”! Seventh and Eighth grade Cadettes have an eight session Journey called aMaze. “Girls create “peace Kits” and learn how to create more peace in the world, one relationship at a time. Girls at this age can earn 3 awards: the Interact, the Diplomat and the peacemaker Awards”? Senior scouts, grades 9 and 10 embark on eight sessions called GIRLtopia. “ The girls explore problems impacting girls in the world and are invited to envision an ideal world – for girls. (Sorry guys, you may not be included!) Through team discussions and reflective experiences, girls act as visionaries who can foresee and ideal world. Their award is the Girl Scout Senior Visionary Award which recognizes girls who use a deep knowledge of their values to envision an ideal world for girls and connect with one another and their communities to move the world closer to their vision”. Now for the drum roll (as if that wasn’t enough!): the oldest Girl Scouts are called Ambassadors and their Journey is entitled “Your Voice, Your World: the Power of Advocacy.” “Girls explore the rich and global history of women’s advocacy efforts and engages the girls to become advocates in their communities. These girls use their values to choose an issue they care about and then learn an eight step process for advocating on this issue. Girls build their networks – using their own Six degrees of Separation” Along the way, they build a network of Community Partner and create a “pitch” to summarize their issue and proposed solutions. These girls earn the prestigious Advocate Award pin. Wow! This seems unbelievable but it is true. The Girl Scouts’ vast national reorganization of councils to create “less moving parts and one voice” has now been peppered with their liberal agenda illustrated throughout the curriculum designed for ALL ages of its girl members. Betty Frieden, past GS Board member, looks conservative to me now! It is no wonder that this feminist organization has incorporated new age “transformative circles” in their messaging, particularly as they continue to engage the controversial Oregon based Ashland Institute as their Training consultants for this new program.
