In God We Trust poster

When Francis Scott Key penned the poem in 1814

that would become our National Anthem,

in the fourth verse he says,

"And this be our motto:  In God is our trust!"

National Anthem

July 14, 2006 -- U.S. Senate Passes a Resolution Affirming our nation motto, "In God We Trust."

This very "controversial" phrase first appeared on our currency during the Civil War.   Check out the history from the U.S. Treasury Department

On July 30, 1956 it became our official National Motto.

On July 24, 2000 the U.S. House of Representatives (106th Congress) unanimously passed a resolution  (H. Res. 548) encouraging the display of our  National Motto in all public buildings and classrooms in the nation.

It says, in part, "Whereas the display and teaching of the national motto to public school children has a valid secular purpose, such secular purpose being to foster patriotism, symbolize the historical role of religion in our society, express confidence in the future, inculcate hope, and instruct in humility. . . ."

Even the ACLU has admitted they cannot fight it!

June 12, 2000 Kalamazoo Gazette:  Carrie Moss, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the ACLU, said fighting the issue would be difficult.  "It's language that has been upheld by the Supreme Court for our money - they decided it didn't necessarily promote any religion, so I think it would be difficult to make an issue about it," Moss said.

February 22, 2002 "Fox News Channel" also has something to say about it!
