Issue

Bad Immigration Bill in the US House

Details

US Representative Bob Goodlatte(R-VA)  has introduced the Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2018 (HR 6136)     This is the weaker of two bills being considered.  Goodlatte had written a stronger bill, but has instead introduced the one preferred by House Speaker Paul Ryan, the “compromise” bill.   Seems he just wants to get something passed, even though it is not a bill that addresses major immigration issues!

According to the Heritage Foundation the compromise bill:

  • Only partly stops chain migration and still failing to turn the legal immigration system into one based on merit.
  • Fails to significantly address the problem of sanctuary cities or increasing the ability of state and local authorities to help enforce immigration law.
  • Creates an expanded and more complex amnesty that is best termed a merit-based, affirmative-action path to citizenship. (If that seems like a contradiction in terms, it is.)

Also, the compromise bill (HR 6136) would give DACA beneficiaries a path to citizenship while including $25 billion for President Trump’s promised border wall.  It also includes no additional funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and includes broad judicial review of virtually every provision in the bill giving room for activist judges the ability to easily stop enforcement of the law!
