Election Reform: As We Concentrated on The Senate, This is What the House Did

Details

Last week as everyone was concentrating on the three so-called election reform bills in the US Senate, over in the US House Nancy Pelosi was gutting a bill concerning NASA and inserting some of the worst components of the three ‘election reform’ bills into this now gutted bill.   On Thursday, this bill, HR 5746, passed in the House by a vote of 220 to 203 with all Democrats, except Congressman Matt Cartwright  (PA 8) who did not vote, voting for the bill and all GOP (except nine who did not vote- none from PA) voting against it!

When you look at the roll call vote, it is still listed as the “NASA Enhanced Use Leasing Extension Act of 2021”!   When you go to the actual bill it is renamed “Freedom to Vote:  John R. Lewis Act”!!

Here’s some of what’s in the new bill:

— Automatic voter registration

— Prohibits states from requiring applicants to provide more than last four digits of social security number

–Permits voter registration application form to serve as application for absentee ballot

–States required to permit same-day voter registration

— Applications to register to vote for those under 18 must be accepted.

— Requires states to allow a minimum of fifteen days of early voting.

— “A State may not require an individual to submit any form of identifying document as a condition of obtaining or casting an absentee ballot. . . .”

That’s only a small sampling of the 720-page bill!

Action Steps

Currently, the Senate is scheduled to convene at noon on Tuesday, January 18th, but who knows what Chuck Schumer will pull before then??  Contact Senator Bob Casey, Jr. and Senator Pat Toomey by clicking here and ask them to vote ‘nay’ on HR 5746, the “Freedom to Vote:  John R. Lewis Act”.
