Pray for the New Congress and New General Assembly

Details

As Article II, Section 4 of the PA Constitution mandates the General Assembly meet at noon on the first Tuesday of January.  This year it fell on New Year’s Day, but the General Assembly met at the State Capital for the roll call and leadership elections.   The Senate doesn’t convene for the new session until 10:00 a.m. on January 15th and the House will reconvene one hour later at eleven a.m.

The US House was sworn in on Thursday, January 3rd.  With Democrats in the majority, it should prove to be a contentious two years ago.   Nancy Pelosi was again elected Speaker of the House, after promising to step down after four years if the Democrats keep control in 2020.  She received 220 votes and the second runner up was Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy with 192.   The House also passed new rules for the 116th Congress.

In the US Senate, Vice President Mike Pence presided over the oath-taking of the 34 newly elected Senators.

Members of the PA General Assembly took an oath to “. . .  support, obey and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the Commonwealth . . . ” (Article IV, Section 3).  Members of Congress took an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic . . . .”   Let’s hope they have read the document(s) they have sworn to defend!

Action Steps

Well, things are already off to a rocky start in Washington, DC with the House voting to reopen the government without one penny for the border wall.  Pelosi’s response when asked about it said she’d give the President $1.  It is doubtful the bill will pass in the Senate and even if it did President Trump would veto it.

Pray for all those who have been elected to the PA General Assembly, as well as the US House and US Senate.  Much could be accomplished, if those individuals would set aside their agendas (or their party leaders’ agendas!) and put the safety and welfare of the United States in the forefront.  No matter what, though, we must remember that God is still in control.  The US has drifted a long way from Him and His purposes, but there is still hope it can be turned around.
