Issue

Pray for the State Legislature

Details

Today is the day — the Pennsylvania legislature was sworn into office.  Two hundred and two of the House’s 203 seats will be filled today.  The resignation of Rep. Leslie Acosta (D-Philadelphia), so she can plead guilty to federal money laundering charges, creates the lone vacancy.   There will be 121 Republicans and 81 Democrats to be sworn in. Twenty-two of those are brand new members to the House, while eight more will be sworn into their first full legislative session, having won special elections sometime during the 2015-16 session.

Over in the Senate, of the 25 seats that were contested in the 2016 elections (the odd-numbered Senate Districts), there will be six new members – 5 Republicans and 1 Democrat. Additionally, two members (one from each party) will be sworn in today having won re-election to a full four-year term after winning special elections sometime during the 2015-16 legislative session.

State Senator Joe Scarnati has been re-elected as the Senate Pro-Temp and State Rep Mike Turzai has been re-elected to his second term as Speaker of the House.

After the swearing-in ceremony, both chambers will hold a joint session to certify the election results for the state’s three elected row offices — Attorney General, State Treasurer and State Auditor — all again in the hands of Democrats.

Action Steps

Every year new laws are passed that impact Pennsylvanians – for good or bad.  Pray for all those who just took their oath of office that they would faithfully adhere to the words they spoke.   They just swore that they would support, obey and defend both the US and PA Constitutions.  Have they even read those documents?  Might be a good question to ask your newly sworn in elected State Rep and State Senator!!
