National Day of Prayer is Today

Details

Did you know it’s the law??  But even before that our nation has a long history of our Presidents and other elected officials calling for public prayer and national days of prayer.  Here’s a little history:

On April 17, 1952 a bill initiated by Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotels and Senator Frank Carlson of Kansas was passed (Public Law 82-324) that the President of the United States was to set aside an appropriate day each year, other than Sunday, as a National Day of Prayer.

In 1986 Vonette Bright and the National Prayer Committee contact Senator Strom Thurmond (R) for guidance on writing a bill that would designate a day for the National Day of Prayer.

In 1987 Senator Thurmond introduced S.1378, which would amend public law 82-324.

On May 7, 1988 S 1378 unanimously passed in the US Senate and a few days later it passed in the House.

The following day President Ronald Reagan signed into law Public Law 100-307 which designated the first Thursday of May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer.

Action Steps

This year’s theme is “Love One Another.”  We should each take some time today to pray for our nation, her leaders, the families that make up this nation.  No one can deny that America needs prayer.  You can access the National Day of Prayer Task Force Prayer Guide here
