Issues  (check corresponding number in ‘Details’ and ‘Action’ Sections)

1.)     Vote on Mensch Amendment to SB 732 is TODAY

2.)    President Once Again Declares June “Gay Pride Month”

3.)    Stephen Glassman has Resigned!

Details

1.)     A vote is scheduled in the State Senate on the Mensch Amendment (MA) to S.B. 732 today.  The MA takes a very weak abortion clinic regulation bill and makes it similar to H.B. 574 which has already passed in the House.  This proposed amendment would require abortion chambers in our state to meet the same standards as Ambulatory Surgical Facilities.  Planned Parenthood and other members of our state’s abortion industry oppose these requirements for abortion clinics.  They claim that such requirements will result in the closure of some abortion clinics and a significant increase in the cost of an abortion.  This vote had been scheduled for May 23, but pro-abortion Senator Patricia Vance engaged in the usual legislative tactic of the minority side in an upcoming vote, i.e., delay.  She took questions of “constitutionality” of the MA to the Republican Caucus just prior to the scheduled vote.  This concern caused the leaders to “pass over” SB 732 and the MA and scheduled the vote for a later date –June 6th.

2.)    On May 31, President Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation urging the observance of June as “gay” pride month.  “NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2011 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.”  Click here to read the entire very troubling proclamation.

3.)     Effective May 23rd Stephen Glassman is no longer chairman of the PA Human Relations Commission; he is simply a commissioner!  Thanks to all who contacted Governor Corbett either via the postcards included in our last mailing, via phone or e-mail.  Glassman has been named as CEO and President of the Community Design Center in Pittsburgh, but will maintain his home in Philadelphia.

Action Steps

1.)     The Senate will reconvene today at 1:00 p.m., but we do not know when the vote on the Mensch Amendment is scheduled.  Contact your State Senator by clicking here or, if you don’t know who your State Senator is, click on “address” or “county” in the upper right hand corner of that same page to find who represents you in Harrisburg.     Ask your State Senator to support the Mensch Amendment to SB 732 and to support final passage of the bill if an intact Mensch Amendment is included.   Also, contact Governor Corbett and urge him to support the passage of strict abortion facility regulation legislation.  Here’s his contact information:  717-772-9048, fax: 717-772-8284, e-mail: governor@state.pa.us

2.)    President Obama continues to cater to the less than 4% of the population that makes up those who identify as homosexual, bisexual or transgender and refuses to stand with the majority of Americans.   If this disturbs you, please contact the President via e-mail by clicking here or by phone at 202-456-1111.

3.) Pray for the new Chairman of the PA Human Relations Commission Gerald Robinson.  Pray that he will seek to represent all Pennsylvanians and not just a small fraction of the population.
