1.)  On Monday the House Democratic Policy Committee met in Harrisburg to receive testimony in favor of HB 300  which would add ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity or expression’ to the PA Human Relations Act.  One of those to testify was Springfield Township, Montgomery County Commissioner Jeffrey Harbison.  Just last Wednesday, over the objections of community members and business owners, they passed a local homosexual special rights ordinance.  Of course, the commissioners called it an “anti-discrimination” ordinance.   I personally travelled to Springfield Township and testified against this ordinance three times, and e-mailed and faxed the commissioners presenting objections and facts.  Additionally, local activists attended many of the meetings and testified against it . . . all to no avail. The vote was straight down party lines.  It has become increasingly evident that a certain political party refuses to listen to reason when it comes to this issue!  When you click on the link to HB 300 above, make sure you check out the sponsors of the bill.  Is your State Representative on that list?  Click here to read our news release concerning Newtown Borough, Bucks County’s venture down this same road.  Especially read some of the facts we presented to Newtown (The same were presented to Springfield Township!); passing a statewide law such as HB 300 would have even more dire consequences.

2.)  . . .  one day after the official repeal of the law banning homosexuals in the military President Obama addressed the United Nations and made this statement, ” “No country should deny people their rights because of who they love, which is why we must stand up for the rights of gays and lesbians everywhere.”  On June 17th, at the urging of the United States,  the United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution endorsing the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people.  Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, called it a “historic moment” for “lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered” (LGBT) persons.

Action Steps

1.)  Contact your State Representative and ask him or her NOT to support HB 300 because of the discriminatory and dangerous consequences to the citizens and businesses of  Pennsylvania.
