AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

November 18, 2003

MASSACHUSETTS SAYS BANNING SAME SEX MARRIAGE IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL

Today the Massachusetts Supreme Court handed down its decision saying that banning same sex marriage is unconstitutional.  It has given the Massachusetts legislature 180 days to decide how to accommodate their decision.

Article 4 of the U.S. Constitution, known as the Full Faith and Credit Clause would require other states to honor marriages performed in Massachusetts under a reciprocity agreement.

We must accelerate our efforts to get a Federal Marriage Amendment passed and further our efforts here in Pennsylvania to get an amendment added to the PA Constitution.  The purpose of both is to define marriage as between one man and one woman.  It is a sad time in our nation's history when these steps must be taken.

  ACTION NEEDED:

1.)  Contact Senator Rick Santorum and ask him to co-sponsor the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) being written by Senator Sam Brownback. We need the strong wording of Senator Brownback's amendment.

His contact information is as follows:

  Washington Office:
511 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-3804
Phone: (202) 224-6324
Fax: (202) 228-0604

Main District Office:
Landmarks Bldg., 100 W. Station Sq. Dr., Ste. 250
Pittsburgh, PA 15219
Phone: (412) 562-0533
Fax: (412) 562-4313

  Send an e-mail

2.)  Contact your state representative and tell him or her of the need to pass an amendment to the PA Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman.  The state does have a Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), but it has never been challenged.  Can we trust our court system to uphold the DOMA?  If we don't act today, will we some day find ourselves in the same situation as Massachusetts?  Find your state representative.

3.)  Sign the petition for the FMA.
