JUDICIAL FILIBUSTER/SUPREME COURT

January 31, 2006 -- Judge Samuel Alito becomes Justice Samuel Alito by a vote of 58-42. 

January 30, 2006 -- Cloture (end of debate) passes by a 75-25 vote.  Click here for the list of 25 Democrats which voted in support of a filibuster.  Final vote on Judge Samuel Alito is tomorrow morning.  

January 24, 2006 -- After a one-week delay tactic by the Democrat Party, Judge Samuel Alito is voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  The vote was strictly along party lines.  Debate on the floor of the Senate begins tomorrow with a vote anticipated by the end of the week.

January 9 through January 12, 2006 -- Judge Samuel Alito withstands 18 hours of Democratic attacks including many assaults on his personal character and integrity.  On Wednesday evening his wife leaves the hearings in tears as Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) offers an apology to Judge Alito and his family for the conduct of his fellow Senators from the other side of the aisle.

October 31, 2005 -- President Bush Nominates Samuel Alito.  Currently Judge Alito serves on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals which serves Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and the Virgin Islands.  Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter says that Judge Alito's confirmation hearings will begin January 9, 2005.

October 3, 2005 -- President Bush Nominates White House Counsel Harriet Miers as Associate Justice to replace Sandra Day O'Connor.  Immediate questions concerning her qualifications arise.  


 

September 29, 2005 -- Judge John Roberts is confirmed to become the 17th Chief Justice of the United States.  Let us all pray that he will be as wise as the first Chief Justice  - John Jay!  President Bush must now nominate someone to fill Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's bench.

September 3, 2005 -- Chief Justice William Rehnquist dies while still serving as Chief Justice of the United States.  President Bush switches his nomination of John Roberts to fill the now vacant seat of Chief Justice.

7.19.05 -- President Bush Nominates U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Judge John Roberts to Fill U.S. Supreme Court Vacancy -- Historically he has shown himself to be a strict constructionist and has not legislated from the bench.  The AFA of PA views this as a step in the right direction and commends President Bush for his wise choice.  The pro-family organization also urges Senator Arlen Specter to move quickly to get Judge Roberts nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and to the floor of the Senate for speedy and fair confirmation hearings.  News Release
