NJ commission says state should allow "gay marriage"

Associated Press - 12/10/2008 5:05:00 AM

CAMDEN, N.J.- A state commission says New Jersey lawmakers should allow gay couples to "marry."

The findings, stated in a final report obtained by The Associated Press, were approved by all 13 members of the state's Civil Union Review Commission. The report states New Jersey's two-year-old civil union law doesn't do enough to give gay couples the same protections as real heterosexual married couples.

If the legislature follows through, New Jersey would become the first state to allow "gay marriage" by passing a law, rather than through a court mandate.

Opponents of gay marriage say the committee was stacked with supporters.

The report also estimates gay weddings would add nearly $250 million to New Jersey's economy over three years.
