Senator Fumo Should Resign Now – Traditional Values Group Says

(Harrisburg) – During Tuesday’s Senate Appropriations Committee hearing,  Senator Vince Fumo verbally attacked each of those who testified in support of the Pennsylvania Marriage Protection Amendment.  Today the American Family Association of Pennsylvania (AFA of PA) calls on Senator Vince Fumo to resign due to his lack of professionalism and the lack of respect shown to Chairman Gibson Armstrong and those testifying in support of one man one woman marriage.

“It appears that Senator Fumo went to the Appropriations Committee hearing on Tuesday with one purpose – to attack anyone that stood for traditional marriage.  He did not go to listen to the arguments in support of the amendment, but to verbally assault anyone and everyone with whom he did not agree,” commented Diane Gramley, president of the AFA of PA.

Senator Fumo additionally accused his fellow Senators of racism and said they would vote to reinstate slavery if given the opportunity through a secret ballot.  Fumo, a white man, told this to a black pastor from his own district in Philadelphia.

“Even though Senator Fumo has backed away from the slavery remarks his entire conduct during the hearing was unbecoming a Pennsylvania Senator and reflects poorly on that legislative body.  One must wonder whether his conduct reflects on other legislators who oppose a constitutional amendment to protect one man one woman marriage,” Gramley remarked.

Viewing the assaults on the character, motives and religious beliefs of those who Senator Fumo disagreed with would make anyone hesitate to testify before a legislative body during any future public hearing.  Pennsylvania deserves better than what Senator Fumo delivered on April 29th.

After 30 years in office, this is Senator Fumo’s last term as he faces federal corruption charges.  He is accused of defrauding the state Senate, a museum and a nonprofit organization through using staff and assets to do his political and personal bidding.  His early resignation would be an asset to Pennsylvania politics.
