CLARION UNIVERSITY TO START

GAY AND LESBIAN ALUMNI GROUP?

A recent alumni newsletter :

"Alumni and other members of the Clarion University

community are seeking interest and input into the establishment

of a gay and lesbian alumni group. . . .

The group intends to offer networking opportunities,

social events, mentoring for undergraduate students

and other areas of alumni support as they are identified.

(Terry) Boots ('72) said he is very encouraged by the

university's receptiveness to the formation of the

alumni group."

Many times such groups turn into a means of approaching students who are questioning their sexuality and recruiting them into the homosexual lifestyle. In most cases such organizations are proactive, seeking students who are homesick and lonely and welcoming them with open arms.

If you are not excited, but very disturbed about this development in one of our local universities, please contact and express your concerns.

Our children are worth the few minutes it will take to express our concerns.

THE PRESIDENT'S RESPONSE:

If you sent a letter or e-mail to Dr. Reinhard, you will find that this is the very same form letter that you received also!    You may also note that President Reinhard did not explain the "mentoring of undergraduate students" mentioned in the alumni newsletter.  Just what does that mean?

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

CLARION UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

Dear Ms. Gramley:

Thank you for your letter of March 5, 2002 in which you express concerns about the formation of a gay and lesbian alumni group within the Clarion University Alumni Association.  The University's receptiveness to the formation of this group is derived from its fundamental commitment to equity and diversity.  This commitment, articulated in statements such as the Clarion University Mission Statement, affirms that Clarion University is a community in which people respect and value one another for their differences and in which they treat one another with civility.

As a public higher education institution.  Clarion University provides equal employment and educational opportunities for all qualified individuals regardless of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, affectional or sexual orientation, age, disability, or other classifications protected under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

The university's openness to a gay and lesbian alumni group, while in no way condoning or endorsing a particular lifestyle, offers a structure through which gay and lesbian alumni may experience networking, programming, and other opportunities generally provided through alumni organizations. Similarly, Clarion's student interest group, Allies, affords membership and support to students interested in gay and lesbian issues.  It should also be noted that other universities within the Commonwealth have either explored or formed gay and lesbian alumni groups.

Thank you again for sharing your concerns.  I hope I was able to clarify Clarion University's position relative to the formation of a gay and lesbian alumni group.

Sincerely,

(signed)

Diane L. Reinhard

President
