Ask Your School Board to Declare November Parental Rights Month!
Details
No one can doubt that parental rights are under assault in this country. Court decisions have been handed down that remove the rights of parents to bring up their children as they see fit.
- The United States Supreme Court in 2000 left it to each individual judge to decide the scope of parental rights on a case-by-case basis, a fact often cited in lower courts since. (Troxel v. Granville)
- The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found in
Fields v. Palmdale School District “that the Meyer-Pierce right [of
parents to direct the upbringing of their children] does not exist beyond the
threshold of the school door.”
The court stated, “We conclude that the parents are possessed of no constitutional right to prevent the public schools from providing information on the subject [of sexuality] to their students in any forum or manner they select.” - A number of courts have already cited the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child as binding on the U.S. and have applied its restrictions and “best interests of the child” principle to disrupt healthy families here in the United States. (NOTE: The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has NEVER been ratified by the US Senate, thus this country is not under the “best interest of the child” principle.)
Pennsylvania is in the Third Circuit, not the Ninth, but we see parental rights eroding here also. We have heard of judges here in PA using the “best interests of the child” reasoning when handing down decisions.
Action Steps
However, probably the greatest assault against our kids is in the public-school system. That is why the AFA of PA is joining with Parents’ Rights in Education in asking you to encourage your school board to endorse the Proclamation for Parents’ Rights declaring November as Parents’ Rights in Education Month. Click here for a copy of the Proclamation. It is also important to note who on your school board votes for/against the proclamation. Also, the public should be made aware of who votes for or against the Parents’ Rights in Education Month Proclamation. Let the AFA of PA know too!!
Here are some ideas how to do this:
Find out who your school board members are by visiting your district’s website. Email a copy of the proclamation to each of the school board members. If phone numbers are available on the website, follow up with a phone call to see if you can identify supporters of the proclamation. Meet with those who express interest in the proclamation and provide them with additional information. Parentalrights.org has printable resources that you can use here
Go to the next school board meeting with as many friends as you can muster. During the public comment period, hand each school board member a copy of the proclamation. You will probably have between 2 to 3 minutes, so divide the reasons to support this proclamation between yourself and several of your friends in order to take the time needed to fully explain the importance of the proclamation.
At the meeting when the proclamation is to be voted on, fill the room with supporters of the proclamation. Wear buttons or carry signs that indicate your support for declaring November as Parents’ Rights in Education Month.
