Details

Didn’t the United States pass the Americans with Disabilities Act a couple decades ago?  Why do we now need the United Nations having a say in this matter?  President Obama  signed the Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons treaty on July 30, 2009 and sent it the Senate for ratification!  It remained in limbo until it became apparent to liberals in the Senate that they were not going to be able to muster the necessary votes to get the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) ratified — which went down in defeat earlier today when 31 Senators announced their opposition to it.  (Senator John Kerry, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,  still plans on holding a vote during the lame duck session.  Let’s not forget all the damage that was done during the lame duck session in 2010!!)

Last Thursday a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing was held.  There were nine total witnesses.  Only two who opposed the treaty were allowed to testify.  Dr. Michael Farris with HSLDA and parentalrights.org was one of them.  Click here to read his report and plea for help in stopping this insidious treaty!

Senator Kerry, who is a big fan of the United Nations, announced that he will hold a Committee vote on CRPD this Thursday, July 19, 2012, and declared that the Senate will pass the Treaty by July 26^th.  Let’s see if we can help stop that from happening!!

This is a way of sneaking in portions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and taking away parental rights!

Article 7 of the UNCRPD gives government the ability to override every decision of a parent of disabled children if the government thinks that its views are in “the best interest of the child.

Here are some additional problems with this treaty according to Eagle Forum:

• Exceed the bounds of the Americans with Disabilities Act and eliminate any remaining state sovereignty on the issue of disability law.
• Demand that all American law on this subject conform to UN standards.
• Force “every person, organization, or private enterprise” to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disability. This imposes impossible burdens and expenses onto private citizens, as they can be held in violation of the treaty if their private property is not fully accessible to persons with disabilities, even if they do not know any persons with disabilities.
• Give the UN the power to determine the legitimacy and lawfulness of the United States’ budgets to assess compliance with such treaties.

Action Steps

Contact Senator Bob Casey, Jr. and Senator Pat Toomey and ask them to vote against the Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons.  Email them AND call their district office nearest you.

Message:  “The Americans with Disabilities Act has done a good job in helping the disabled in this country; this treaty will not help the disabled.  Treaties supersede US law and this treaty will, among other things, take away parental rights. Vote ‘NO’ on the Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons.”
