AFA of PA ACTION ALERT
March 2, 2011
Issues (check corresponding number in ‘Details’ and ‘Action’ Sections)
1.) Speaker of House Says Congress Will Defend Marriage
2.) Judiciary Markup of HR 3
Details
1.) Speaker of the House John Boehner told a gathering of the National Religious Broadcasters in Nashville that Congress would take steps to protect marriage after the Obama Administration announced it would no longer defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). This must happen through the passage of a resolution stating that the House will defend DOMA and then they can hire attorneys and try to intervene in the court cases where the Administration’s Department of Justice has stepped away from its role as defense attorney. If this action is not taken, then wherever DOMA has been declared unconstitutional, such as in the First Circuit Court of Appeals case, that will be the law affecting all areas under the jurisdiction of the First Circuit Court (Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico).
2.) Two weeks ago the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced it was rescinding the health workers’ conscious protections and ALL healthcare workers at all levels from doctor to pharmacist must dispense contraception. The problem being that drugs like Plan B and ella also act as abortifacients. That decision was made despite 187,000 public comments on the HHS website which opposed the changes and the fact that it will now require seven out of ten health professionals to decide between dispensing these drugs which they morally oppose or finding another line of work. As part of H.R. 3, the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” steps are taken to protect the rights of health care workers permanently. There will be a mark up of HR 3 on Thursday March 3rd in the House Judiciary Committee.
