. . . “Pennsylvania’s laws that protect the life and health of women and preborn children are in jeopardy, including those related to gestational age for an abortion, informed consent for an abortion, and regulation of abortion clinics.” This is an excerpt from the co-sponsorship memo circulated by State Senator Judy Ward. The memo continues: “The abortion industry is asking the court to declare a right to abortion and a right to taxpayer funding of abortion in Pennsylvania’s constitution. If the court declares such rights, all of Pennsylvania’s laws that protect the life and health of mothers and preborn children by regulating abortion are in danger of being subsequently struck down.”
Senator Judy Ward has introduced SB 956, which is a joint resolution proposing an amendment to the PA Constitution providing that there is no right to abortion or funding for an abortion.
By a vote of 36 to 11, it was removed from the table on May 25th.
Action Steps
Remember a constitutional amendment must be passed in two consecutive legislative session, before it is placed on the ballot for voters to decide. This current session ends on November 30th. The budget must be approved by the end of June, then summer break sets in. So, your legislators need to know that action needs taken on this constitutional amendment – SB 956 – ASAP.
Contact your State Rep and State Senator and ask them to support SB 956.
Contact Senate Pro Temp Jake Corman at 814-355-0477 and ask him to move SB 956 forward for a vote.
Contact Speaker of the House Bryan Cutler at 717-284-1965 and ask him to move SB 956 forward as soon as it reaches the House.
