Issue

LGBTQ Activism in the Midst of COVID

Details

Unlike some other states, in Pennsylvania a bill can be introduced any time throughout the long legislative session.  On August 3 Republican State Reps Thomas Murt (part Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties) and Wendi Thomas (part Bucks County) were joined by Democrat Pamela DeLissio (part Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties) in circulating a co-sponsorship memo for a “LGBTQ+ Bill of Rights”   The assertion is made that those who identify a LGBTQ+ have suffered discrimination like black Americans have, but have they?  Have they been prevented from voting?  Have they been forced to use separate water fountains or movie theatres?  Have they been forced to go to segregated schools?  No to each of those questions!

This effort equates the choice to identify as gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, etc., etc. to the unchangeable characteristic of race or ethnicity.  Passage of such a bill would also open women’s bathrooms, shower rooms and locker rooms to men who think they are women.

Although Murt is known for his pro-LGBTQ stands, circulation of the memo apparently has upset PA’s first openly homosexual House member, Brian Sims.  Read Representative Murt’s statement regarding a phone conversation with Representative Sims.
