Memorial Day 2024 – Why They Died
Details
As we remember those who have died to make us free, my first thought is always, “What would they say if they were alive today and saw the mess the country they died for is in?”
Did they die for
legalized abortion in all nine months of pregnancy?
same-sex “marriage”?
special rights for homosexuals simply because of the sexual activity in which they engage?
politicians who do not have enough courage to do what must be done?
activists judges who legislate from the bench?
judges who look to foreign law to interpret our Constitution?
attorneys general who do not defend the laws they have sworn to defend?
sex ed programs that say ‘gay is okay’ and equate homosexuality to heterosexuality?
public schools telling students as young as kindergarten they may have been born in the wrong body?
schools that hand out condoms?
neighborhood strip clubs?
an entertainment industry that seeks to desensitize us to all things deviant?
“gay” pride parades/festivals?
a two-tiered justice system?
lawfare against a political opponent?
You get the picture.
Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, was first started during the Civil Way, with many places claiming to be the one to hold the first Decoration Day honoring the war dead by placing flowers on their graves. It became an official holiday in 1967, when President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation to that effect.
The first Decoration Day speech was given by James Garfield at Arlington National Cemetery in 1868. Garfield was a former Union general and would become the 20th President of the US. One thing the history books usually don’ t mention is that James A. Garfield was also a minister and evangelist. He was the only ordained minister to ever serve in the White House.
Here are a couple of his quotes to consider as we remember the fallen today:
“Now, more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of the Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities . . .”
. [I]f the next centennial does not find us a great nation . . . it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”
