Fighting Pornography

Details

I attended a meeting in our nation’s capitol last week and during that meeting the trailer, as well as a 30 minute segment, of a documentary were shown.  It dealt with the negative impact of pornography — specifically addressing the porn problem within the church.  Porn addiction, in general, is a subject that is largely being ignored, but most definitely it is being ignored within the church.  How can a pastor or other church leader address a sin in which they are involved?  They can’t and won’t.  Thus the problem is growing within the church and many are left with a feeling of hopelessness.   This documentary, The Heart of the Matter, provides insight into the porn problem within the church, the impact on individuals and marriages and the church as a whole.  It also provides hope.

During the meeting last week, director Jessica Mockett and producer Nathan Lee presented their reasons for creating this documentary.  Jessica felt strongly she needed to create this work, but she didn’t think she knew anyone who was addicted to porn.  She has since found out several members of her family are.  Nathan is a recovering porn addict who became addicted in his early teenage years and lived a double life for nine years.  He continued going through the motions of being a Christian — attending church and youth group, being a leader everyone looked up to, but his ‘other life’ was the dark side of porn and sexual addiction.   Nine years of this double life before he finally reached rock bottom and had to confess to his parents, family, friends and the church.  He was ‘clean’ for four years, but fell back into porn.  He has since climbed out of that pit again, but like any addiction it is a continual struggle to stay clean.   His fiancé helped him climb out of the pit the last time and, as his wife,  continues supporting him in his struggle to stay clean.

Even the production of this documentary has had an impact!  Jessica and Nathan reported that after the filming of some of the testimonies, five of the cameramen came to them confessing their struggle with porn addiction.    This issue must be addressed!!

Action Steps

This is an unusual request, but would you consider helping them finish this much needed documentary?  The price tag for this work is estimated to be $200,000.  That’s a lot of money!  An organization has offered them a $15,000 matching grant.   Jessica has started another Kickstarter campaign to raise the $15,000 in order to receive the grant money.  As you go to  their Kickstarter page, you will see they have surpassed the $15,000 threshold.  But, as Jessica noted, in the first video on their page and in her written update, they are still a long way from their overall goal of $200,000.  Would you consider helping?  Click here to access their page to watch the video and donate.  The campaign ends on October 5th.
