More Reflections on the 2024 General Election
One month ago today Americans went to the polls to elect a new President, elect members of Congress and US Senators whose terms were up. As Americans we get to elect a new President every four years and, according to the US Constitution, members of the House of Representatives are up for re-election every two years. Here in PA, we flipped two seats from Democrat to GOP. The US House of Representatives will see two new GOP members from Pennsylvania: Rob Bresnahan, a first-time candidate and developer who runs a family construction company, beat Matt Cartwright (PA-8), while current PA House member Ryan Mackenzie ousted Democrat Susan Wild (PA-7). These were two of the most expensive races in the country: $35 million reported spent to the Federal Election Commission in the Wild-Mackenzie race and more than $31 million reported spent in the Cartwright-Bresnahan race.
As of Tuesday, December 4th, we finally know ALL the results of the November 5th election, since California has finished “curing” and counting their ballots giving the Democrats one more seat in the US House. In California’s 13th Congressional District, Democrat Adam Gray unseated GOP Congressman John Duarte. With that victory Democrats will hold 215 seats, while Republicans will control the House with a 220 majority. However, until special elections are held there will be vacant GOP seats. Congressman Matt Gaetz has resigned from this Congress and, even though he won re-election, says he will not take that seat in 2025. Additionally, President Trump has nominated Representative Mike Waltz of Florida for a national security advisor position and Representative Elise Stefanik of New York for Ambassador to the UN. If Waltz and Stefanik are confirmed and resign their seats, that will temporarily lower the GOP majority to 217. It takes 218 votes to pass a bill. Until the special elections take place, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson will need to hold the GOP together and get some support from Democrats in order to get important bills passed to advance President Trump’s America First Agenda.
All in all, not good news for the Democrats, especially with Donald Trump winning re-election. As election night went on and the Democrat dominoes started falling, online searches for “how to emigrate to Canada” shot up 5,000 percent. Progressives have threatened to leave the country and it would probably be best for the country if they did!
There were some additional wins on General Election Day 2024. These include:
- 75% voter turnout in PA
- President Trump won all the battle ground states and ended with 312 Electoral College votes to Kamala Harris’ 226. President Trump also won the popular vote – the first time a Republican has won that vote since George W. Bush in 2004.
- Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota voted down pro-abortion proposals.
