Blog Post – When Absolute Truth No Longer Exists

Absolute truth — truth that never changes over time.  Does it exist any longer?  As Christians we understand absolute truth is only found in God’s Word and that never changes, but increasingly we live in a society that does not believe there is absolute truth.   Now, in their eyes, truth is how they define it.

As a result, we live in a society that is increasingly secular, self-centered, confused, violent and hopeless.  If truth is constantly changing, what can one depend upon.  If truth is one thing today, but is something else tomorrow, one year or ten years from now, what solid foundation can we set our lives upon?

According to Wikipedia,  “From 1999 to 2010, the suicide rate among American ages 35 to 64 increased nearly 30 percent. The largest increases were among men in their fifties, with rates rising nearly 50 percent, to 30 per 100,000. For women aged 60 to 64, rates rose 60 percent, to 7.0 per 100,000.    According to the last study done by the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, in 2014 suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the US. Moreover, each year 44,193 Americans die by suicide, imposing a cost of $51  billion to US annually. Other additional facts showed by the study were:

  1. The annual age-adjusted suicide rate is 13.26 per 100,000 individuals.
  2. Men die by suicide 3.5x more often than women.
  3. Women attempt suicide 3x more often than men.
  4. On average, there are 121 suicides per day.
  5. White males accounted for 7 of 10 suicides in 2015.
  6. The rate of suicide is highest in middle age—white men in particular.

A lot of money is being earmarked in the federal and state budgets to fight the opioid epidemic.  According to the PA state website, “At least ten Pennsylvanians die every day from a drug overdose, with over 3,500 overdose deaths in Pennsylvania in 2015 alone.”   But why do people turn to drugs for fulfillment?  Could hopelessness play a part?

Even in this world with all the latest technological gadgets, it seems hopelessness and despair abound, why?  Could it be that when absolute truth is no longer acknowledged, when people begin to believe they are no longer answerable to someone bigger than they are, in the end they lose hope?

As America has turned her back on God, we have, and continue to, suffer the consequences.  Life has become cheap through the legalization of abortion, the lack of enforcing federal obscenity laws, the rampant sexual exploitation and human trafficking that has resulted.  Life in America has been cheapened and we see this through newborn babies thrown in trash cans  by teenager mothers, babies being ripped limb by limb from their mother’s womb, increased child molestation, drive-by shootings, road rage.  These all point to a nation’s people who has lost their way.

Christian song artist Carmen sang several years ago, “We need God in American, again.”  The words to that song are truer today than when he first sang them!

Psalm 62:5, “For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.”

Psalm 147:11, “but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.”

Proverbs 26: 12, “Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”

Acts 17:27, “that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us”
