Vote on Bad UN Treaty Expected Tomorrow — December 4
Details
Tomorrow at noon is the showdown between the radical UN treaty- the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) — and American sovereignty.
Here are some other problems:
— insufficient hearings held — this treaty was signed by President Obama in May and sent to the Senate in July — there has not been time to hold the necessary hearings to investigate the legal ramifications of ratifying such a treaty.
— free abortions for the disabled — Article 25 of the Convention requires States Parties to: “[p]rovide persons with disabilities with the same range, quality, and standard of free or affordable health care and programs as provided to other persons, including in the area of sexual and reproductive health and population-based public health programmes.”
— supersede existing US law — ratification of this law will mean US laws dealing with the disabled – i.e. the Americans With Disabilities Act, Telecommunications Act of 1996, the Air Carrier Access Act of 1986, the Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act of 1984, the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act, and the Architectural Barriers Act of 1968 — will be put on the “back shelf”
— bans all “persons, organizations or private enterprise” from discriminating against the disabled. This imposes impossible burdens and expenses onto private citizens, as they can be held in violation of the treaty if their private property is not fully accessible to persons with disabilities.
— Gives UN power to monitor US budgets – making sure we are in compliance with the treaty.
— US must report to UN committee regularly – the “committee of experts” would have the authority to review our reports and make “such suggestions and general recommendations on the report as it may consider appropriate.”
— CRPD’s Article 7 gives the government the power to override every decision of the parent of a disabled child by using the caveat “the best interest of the child.”
— no workable definition of ‘disability’ — treaty states that “disability is an evolving concept,” that means open sesame for litigation against the U.S.
Action Steps
Today and again before noon tomorrow contact both of your US Senators:
1.) Contact Senator Bob Casey, Jr. His DC office number is (202) 224-6324. His fax number is (202) 228-0604. You can use the webform here. Please also call his regional office nearest you.
Message to Senator Bob Casey, Jr.: “Protect American Sovereignty and parental rights — vote ‘NO’ on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.” America does not need the UN interfering with our taking care of America’s disabled.”
2.) Contact Senator Pat Toomey. His DC office number is (202) 224-4254. His fax number is (202) 228-0284. Use the webform here. Please also call his district office nearest you.
Message to Senator Pat Toomey: “Thank you for signing onto the letter to Senator Reid asking that the vote on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities treaty not be voted on during the lame duck session. Unfortunately, Senator Reid has ignored your letter and scheduled a vote for December 4th. To protect American sovereignty and parental rights, please vote ‘no’ on this treaty.”
