UPS Doublespeak Concerning Grants to Boy Scouts

Details

Earlier this month it was reported that the UPS Foundation would stop giving grants to organizations which ‘discriminate.’  A UPS spokeswoman says groups applying for the grants will have to adhere to the same standards UPS does. The company says it does not discriminate against anyone based on race, religion, disability or sexual orientation.  Click here for the statement on their website.

UPS says it was not pressured into changing its policy; however, that is not the truth!  Former Eagle Scout Zach Wahls, who was raised by two “moms,” started a petition on change.org in early October which garnered over 80,000 signers.  He is also the co-founder of Scouts for Equality, which has a goal of forcing the Boy Scouts to remove their ban on homosexual leaders and members.

In the past when concerned citizens have called UPS about this issue, they have been given misleading statements by UPS.  The company is trying to lead people to believe they have not stopped their grants to the Boy Scouts.  However the Boy Scouts know differently.  Here’s their statement:

“We are disappointed to learn about this [UPS] decision but respect everyone’s right to have and express a different opinion. Unfortunately, this decision will have a direct impact on the youth we serve in local communities.  Through 110,000 units, Scouting represents millions of youth and adult members in diverse communities across the nation, each with a variety of beliefs on this topic. Scouting’s focus will remain on working together to deliver the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training.”

Action Steps

1.) Contact UPS and express your disappointment in their decision to discriminate against the Boy Scouts by withholding grants.  Their Public Relations number is 404-828-7123 and their email is pr@ups.com   During this Christmas season, does that package need to be shipped by UPS?  Using a different shipper will send a direct message to UPS.

2.)  Thank the national office of the Boy Scouts for not caving in to the mounting pressure for them to conform to today’s misguided efforts to normalize homosexual behavior.  Thank them for maintaining their ban on homosexual and atheist leaders and members.  Their number is 972-580-2000 (8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Central Time) or through this webform.

3.)  If you want to support the Boy Scouts, give directly to them.  The United Way and others cannot be trusted to support the Scouts.
