Action Alert – Motor Voter Act is a Problem!

AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

Issue

Motor Voter Act is a Problem!

Details

Did you know the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA) or Motor Voter Law has created a lot of problems!  Here are a few of its requirements:

  • NVRA requires states to offer voter registration when individuals apply for or renew a driver’s license.
  • It also requires that voter registration forms be available at state-funded offices providing public assistance, unemployment compensation or services for the disabled.
  • Additionally, NVRA restricts states from effectively managing their own voter registration lists.  The states are limited on how they can clean up their voter rolls resulting in outdated, inaccurate and duplicate voter registrations!

It was signed into law by President Bill Clinton with the promises of increasing voter registration, making the election process “more accessible to the general public,” and boosting election participation among groups that are “historically underrepresented.”  However, the NVRA has fundamentally compromised the integrity of our electoral system by requiring states to register voters without proof of citizenship.

In reality, Congress’ constitutional power is limited when it comes to elections.  According to Article I, Section 4, Congress can only regulate the times, places, and manner of holding elections for Senators and Representatives.  Neither this Section nor the enumerated powers in Section 8 of the same Article give the federal government this type authority over the states.

Action Steps:

Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) has introduced HR 55 which would repeal the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 and restore election integrity and state sovereignty by returning the responsibility of voter registration to the states.  Ask your US Representative to support HR 55 by clicking here
