Ask Senator Casey to Vote “Yea” on Neal Gorsuch for Supreme Court
Details
On Monday Judge Gorsuch was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee by an 11-9 vote – strictly along party lines. Neither Senator Bob Casey nor Senator Pat Toomey are on this committee. The vote came shortly after Democrats secured enough votes to block the nomination in the full Senate using the filibuster which would require 60 votes in order to confirm Judge Gorsuch. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he would change the Senate rules in order to simply allow for a simple majority vote to confirm Judge Gorsuch.
The filibuster is not part of the Constitution, but Article 1, Section 5 gives the Senate and House the authority to make their own rules and it does not restrict when rule changes can take place.
The Democrats are outraged that McConnell would consider changing the rules! However, in 2013, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) shamed the GOP for considering the very thing she’s advocating today! “We need to call out these filibusters for what they are — naked attempts to nullify the results of the last presidential election… If Republicans continue to filibuster these highly qualified nominees for no reason other than to nullify the president’s constitutional authority, then senators not only have the right to change the filibuster rules, senators have a duty to change the filibuster rules.”
