November 7th — General Election Day — is fast approaching. Most races on the ballot will be local i.e. district attorney, coroner, some row officers, city mayor, borough council, township supervisor, school board, etc. The only statewide races are for judges — Supreme Court, Superior Court and Commonwealth Court. Even those this is considered an “off-year” election, there really is never an off-year election! Here are two reasons why judicial races are so important:
1.) The PA Supreme Court just voted to take a case that challenges the law regarding school funding distribution.
2.) When the Democrats lost the White House in 2016, they were incensed. Now there is a George Soros-funded effort in all 50 states to challenge the redistricting that takes place every ten years after the census is taken.
The PA Supreme Court currently has five Democrats and two Republicans on it. There is one open seat (Sallie Mundy (R) vs. Dwayne Woodruff (D)) and Chief Justice Thomas Saylor (R) and Justice Debra Todd (D) are up for retention votes.
There is also an opportunity to vote for a constitutional amendment. Here’s the language:
“Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to permit the General Assembly to enact legislation authorizing local taxing authorities to exclude from taxation up to 100 percent of the assessed value of each homestead property within a local taxing jurisdiction, rather than limit the exclusion to one-half of the median assessed value of all homestead property, which is the existing law?”
