Left Reacts to Justice Clarence Thomas’ Words Concerning Same-Sex Marriage Case
Details
Last month in the decision that overturned Supreme Court’s previous opinions in Roe and Casey, Justice Thomas wrote a separate opinion. In that opinion he acknowledged that this case does not directly affect any rights except abortion. But he also wrote, “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.”
Of those three, the one that has put the Left on full alert is his reference to Obergefell, which forced so-called same-sex marriage on all 50 states in 2015. On July 18th, in response to Justice Thomas’ reference to Obergefell, the “Respect for Marriage Act” was introduced in the US House and US Senate. This bill will
- Overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA which passed overwhelmingly in 1996 and was signed into law by Bill Clinton.
- It would require all states to legally recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
