LGBTQ Activists in Harrisburg
Details
On Sunday LGBTQ+ activists will be descending on the State Capital to “pressure elected officials to protect rights for LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians.” They are “demanding action to make sure LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians have equal access to housing, jobs, health care and public spaces.”
They plan on marching around the Capital beginning at 1:00 p.m. and then will hold a rally with LGBTQ activists speaking. They have buses and carpools lined up to bring activists in from across the Commonwealth.
The Pennsylvania Youth Congress is one of the organizers. Its mission is to “unite young LGBTQ leaders from across the commonwealth within their schools and communities in order to create a responsive and organized statewide movement.” Their board chair, Jason Landau Goodman, claims, “The basic rights of LGBTQ+ people are under vicious attack every day across our state and nation.”
This is how the LGBTQ+ activists see any opposing viewpoint – a vicious attack. And to give you a little indication of this group’s intentions: it “was founded in 2011 as a coalition of high school and college LGBTQ student organizations. Over 50 LGBTQ student groups have become members of PYC. These student organizations have direct access to leadership development, networking, and important advocacy opportunities.”
Action Steps:
Let your State Rep and State Senator know you oppose dismantling Pennsylvania law which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. HB 1800 and SB 434 would repeal Section 1704 of Title 23 (Domestic Relations) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, which currently only recognizes marriage between a man and woman. Also, let them know that you oppose extending special protections to individuals simply because of how they identify or the sexual activity in which they engage.
