AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

September 29, 2010

Issues  (check corresponding number in ‘Details’ and ‘Action’ Sections)

1.)    Don’t Forget to Register to Vote

2.)    Why Isn’t Pennsylvania on This Amicus Brief?

3.)    US House Considering Resolution

Details

1.)    Monday, October 4th is the deadline to register to be able to vote in the all-important November 2nd election.  All voter registration forms must be returned to your county courthouse or postmarked by October 4th.

2.)    As you recall, in early August District Judge Vaughn Walker declared California’s voter-passed constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between one man and one woman unconstitutional.   On Friday the state of Wyoming joined nine other states in signing onto an amicus brief (friend of the court) in support of Proposition 8 in California.   Among other points, the 39-page brief asserts that same-sex marriage is not a fundamental right; questions the legal grounds of the decision; and holds that individual states, not the federal court system, have final say in decisions about whether to allow same-sex marriages.  The other states on the brief are Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia.    Our question is where is Pennsylvania?

3.)    The US House is poised to vote on a resolution condemning the theft of the Mojave Desert Cross Memorial. The seven foot tall cross was first erected in 1934, the memorial was simply a cross placed in the Mojave Desert to honor the fallen warriors of World War I, and in 2002 it was declared to be a National Memorial. On April 28, 2010, the Supreme Court issued its decision protecting the memorial, but on May 9, 2010, the cross was ripped from its foundation and stolen. Another cross was erected a few days later, but US Attorney General Eric Holder ordered the National Park Service to take it down.
