Blog Post:  Twenty-four Years Ago – where were you?

September 11, 2001-  where were you when you first heard of the attacks in New York City, then the Pentagon, then Shanksville?  We’re asked that, even as those who were alive when President Kennedy was shot – where were you?  Too many Americans living today were not alive during these two horrific attacks on our nation – one taking out a sitting President and the other killing almost 3,000 Americans.  Where were you?

How will this day  —  now called Patriots Day — be commemorated in our nation’s schools?  The students in those classrooms were not alive then.  Too many of the teachers in front of the classroom were not even alive!!     

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Philadelphia wants to partner with local schools and it has some suggestions on ways to commemorate 911.  Here are their ideas:    CAIR-Philadelphia’s education page provides a guide titled “Remembering and Reflecting: Teaching September 11, 2001 in Diverse Classrooms.” It advises teachers to “avoid using inaccurate and inflammatory terms such as ‘Islamic terrorists,’ ‘jihadists,’ or ‘radical Islamic terrorists.'” 

The attacks on 911 brought the country together – for a short while.  Churches were filled the Sunday following the Tuesday attack on our nation, but that didn’t last many weeks.  Soon Americans again went about their daily business, once again placing God on the back burner of their lives.
