Background: As you know the PA Supreme Court has declared the 2011 congressional map unconstitutional and gave the legislature until February 9th to get a new map on Governor Wolf’s desk. Keep in mind the court did not get their guidelines into the hands of legislative leaders until two days before this deadline! Even with this tight deadline, the legislature met it. However, as expected, Governor Wolf vetoed the map. Now apparently, it is back in the hands of the PA Supreme Court who has hired Stanford Professor Nathaniel Persily and has given him a Monday, February 19th deadline! Taxpayers will pay him $500 per hour “plus reasonable expenses” for a total cost not to exceed $100,000. Didn’t we already pay the legislature to carry out its constitutional responsibility to redraw the map, not once but twice?
Update: State Representative Cris Dush is circulating a co-sponsorship memo to begin impeachment proceedings against PA Supreme Court Justices Max Baer, David Wecht, Debra Todd, Christine Donohue and Kevin Dougherty noting that the order they supported in declaring the PA congressional map unconstitutional “blatantly and clearly contradicts the plain language of the Pennsylvania Constitution, engaged in misbehavior in office.” Read the co-sponsorship memo here
Click here to read a letter sent by House Speaker Mike Turzai and Senate President Pro-Temp Joe Scarnati to Governor Wolf after he rejected the newly redrawn map. This letter lays out clearly the absurdity of Wolf’s reasons for rejecting the redrawn map!
