Call These Two Senators and Ask Them to Remain Strong

Two Democrat Senators – Joe Manchin (WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ) are holding up Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s  (D- NY) plan to change the filibuster rules so they can pass their idea of “election reform.”  As we said in our previous action alert, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pulled a fast one last week and completely gutted a bill dealing with NASA (HR 5746) and inserted language from the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act.  The new bill, now called the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, passed in the House on Thursday. 

Now, the only thing standing in the way of the Democrats to successfully takeover the American election process is 50 Senate Republicans and two Democrats.  The two Democrats — Manchin and Sinema —  have expressed support for portions of HR 5746, but do not support changing the filibuster rules in order to pass it. Currently ending a filibuster requires 60 votes in order for debate and a vote on the bill to proceed.   This is called a cloture vote.   If the ability of the Republicans (or any minority party in the future) to use the filibuster disappears, then the majority party can do whatever it wants.

The Democrats are anxious to get HR 5746 passed and are looking for ways to make it happen. Democrats in the US House and Senate have hit the airwaves this past weekend painting Manchin and Sinema as the bad guys who want to take away the right to vote from minorities and other lies they think will force the two senators to change their minds.

Action Steps

This is an issue that impacts every freedom-loving American, not just West Virginia and Arizona citizens!  Call Senator Joe Manchin and Senator Kyrsten Sinema:

  1. Thank them for their strong stand to protect the filibuster – really the only tool the minority party has.
  2. Urge them to maintain their strong stand against changing the filibuster rule.   Americans are counting on their courageous stand in order to maintain our representative republic.
