AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

January 18, 2011

Issues  (check corresponding number in ‘Details’ and ‘Action’ Sections)

1.)     House Vote to Repeal Obamacare; then vote to replace

2.)    Effort to Slow Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

Details

1.)     Tomorrow, January 19th the House will vote on HR 2, legislation which would fully repeal the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.  It is expected to pass the solid Republican House.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he will not bring the bill up for a vote, but he has been challenged by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, “He should bring it up for a vote if he’s so confident he’s got the votes.”

The following day on January 20th the House will have to vote on H.R. 9, a bill that would instruct several House committees to craft new legislation to replace Obamacare.

2.)     Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA-52) will introduce legislation that gives combat units the right or the authority to exempt themselves from the repeal of the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy.’  The measure would also require the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps chiefs to submit to the congressional defense committees “written certification that repeal … will not degrade the readiness, effectiveness, cohesion and morale of combat arms units and personnel of the armed force under [each] officer’s jurisdiction engaged in combat, deployed to a combat theater, or preparing for deployment to a combat theater.

Action Steps

1.) Contact your Congressman and ask him or her to vote ‘yea’ on HR 2 on Wednesday and ‘yea’ on HR 9 on Thursday. Phone and e-mail your Congressman.   Click here for contact information.

2.) When you contact your Congressman about voting ‘yes’ on HR 2 and HR 9, please also ask him or her to co-sponsor Congressman Hunter’s bill to protect our combat units from implementation of the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
