Let Net Neutrality Die
Details
On December 14, 2017 the FCC voted to repeal the Obama era net neutrality rules which stifled the internet. As now FCC chairman Ajit Pai noted back in 2015 in voicing his opposition to the rules changes, ““This is not only a radical departure from the bipartisan, market-oriented policies that have served us so well for the last two decades.” He further noted the FCC was flip-flopping on rules they had just put in places months earlier simply because President Obama wanted net neutrality enacted.
The rules remain on the books because the repeal was contingent on US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approval of modified information-collection requirements. The OMB approval came last month, allowing Pai to schedule the repeal for Monday, June 11.
Earlier this year, PA Congressman Mike Doyle (PA-14) introduced legislation (H.J.Res. 129) in the House to overrule the FCC’s action, and Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced a counterpart bill in the Senate (S.J.Res. 52). The Senate resolution was approved on May 16th by a vote of 52 to 47. On June 7th the entire Senate Democratic Caucus wrote a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan urging him to allow a vote of SJ Res 52 on the House floor.
Action Steps
The permanent repeal of net neutrality is scheduled for TODAY, but Speaker Ryan and other House leaders are under pressure to bring the Senate resolution up for a vote. Contact leadership and ask them to not bring SJ Res 52 up for a vote and allow the repeal of net neutrality to take place.
