Jack Phillips and the First Amendment Face the US Supreme Court Today!

Details

A little background:  Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado,  has always served homosexuals, but in 2012 when he was asked to bake a “wedding” cake for homosexual couple Charlie Craig and David Mullins he refused.  At that time same-sex “marriage” was illegal in Colorado, but the state had added the words “sexual orientation” to its non-discrimination laws!  It should be noted here that Phillips also refuses to bake Halloween cakes and those with pornography.

As acknowledged by all parties, Phillips told the men, “I’ll make you birthday cakes, shower cakes, sell you cookies and brownies, I just don’t make cakes for same-sex weddings.”

The men were unhappy and went to the ACLU and sued Jack Phillips for discrimination.  He lost the case at every level  and was told he must bake “wedding” cakes for homosexual couples.  In 2016 the Colorado Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal on the Colorado Civil Rights Commission demand that Phillips and his staff at Masterpiece Cakeshop undergo re-education training and file quarterly compliance reports for two years.  Since then Phillips has stopped making wedding cakes which has resulted in a loss of approximately 40 percent of his annual revenue.

This case which pits homosexual activists against religious freedom is being heard today in the United States Supreme Court.  The ruling will likely not be handed down until June and more than likely it all depends on one person:  Justice Anthony Kennedy, who unfortunately has ruled on the wrong side in every case involving “homosexual rights.”

If the Court rules the wrong way, it will mean homosexuals can force every Christian baker, florist, photographer, videographer, wedding gown maker (i.e. WW. Bridal Boutique in Bloomsburg), etc.  in America to use their God-given talents to affirm something they view as sinful.

The First Amendment itself hangs in the balance with this case!

In early September the Trump administration filed a friend-of-the -court brief in support of Jack Phillips.  Since then many have been filed both for and against Jack.   One such brief in support of Phillips was signed by eighty-six members of Congress.  Neither Senator Bob Casey nor Senator Pat Toomey signed the brief and only four PA Congressmen signed it — Mike Kelly (PA-3), Scott Perry PA-4) , Keith Rothfus (PA -12) and GT Thompson (PA-5).
