Ask Allegheny County Council to Approve Patriotic Display – Including “In God We Trust”
On July 1, 2014, Allegheny County Councilwoman, Sue Means introduced a resolution to have our National Motto, “In God We Trust,” displayed in the Allegheny County Council Chambers, Resolution #8376-14. This resolution proposes the posting of the National Motto along with the Bill of Rights.
The anti-motto forces have been speaking out at council meetings, and sending letters and e-mails. If council members do not hear from residents of Allegheny County who are in support of displaying our national motto, they likely will vote no.
Council members need to hear from county residents by this Thursday, August 28 at 4 pm; members will be debating the resolution to display the National motto during the Government Reform Committee meeting. Check the end of this alert for a list of all council members.
Remind council members that it is perfectly legal to display the National Motto. Congress passed a bipartisan resolution encouraging the display of the National Motto in all government buildings and the US Supreme Court has upheld the right to display it in public buildings. It is currently displayed in the US Capitol, the state Capitol in Harrisburg and many county courthouses within the Commonwealth. Why not Allegheny County? To vote in favor of Resolution #8376-14 is a patriotic vote!
1.) Pray that Council members will vote to approve this display. Pray that the seven co-sponsors will remain committed to the resolution and not be swayed by the naysayers. See the end of this alert for a list of Council members.
2.) The resolution will be debated during the Government Reform Committee meeting beginning at 4:00 p.m. today. This meeting will be held in Conference Room 1 of the Allegheny County Courthouse, 436 Grant Street, Pittsburgh and is open to the public, but public comments are not taken. Contact council members by 4:00 today and ask them to support Resolution #8376-14 — Phone: (412) 350-6490 Fax: (412) 350-6499 or email email@example.com (this goes to all county council members)
3.) As a resident of Allegheny County, consider speaking in favor of Resolution #8376-14 at the next regularly scheduled council meeting — Tuesday, September 9th at 5:00 p.m. These meetings are held in the 4th Floor – Gold Room of the County Courthouse, 436 Grant Street, Pittsburgh. A request to speak must be received by the Office of the County Council no later than 24 hours prior to the meeting date. Click here for more details.
