The year 1973 was a terrible year for a baby in his or her mother’s womb. The US Supreme Court decided that a baby’s life was worthless and, in one fell swoop, took away the rights of states to ban abortion. On January 22, 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Roe v. Wade, finding that a “right of privacy” it had earlier discovered was “broad enough to encompass” a right to abortion and adopting a trimester scheme of pregnancy. University of Pennsylvania’s Will “Lia” Thomas made waves—both literally and figuratively – in the world of sports when he overturned every women’s swimming record in the country. Will Thomas, swimming as a male for the men’s team, went from a ho hum swimmer ranking in the men’s 200 freestyle in the mid-500’s and 462 overall. However, swimming as Lia Thomas he entered NCAA Champs ranked No. 1 among women. This is but one example of many, but it appears the sporting world may be waking up.
