Why is The US Postal Service Issuing a Stamp Honoring Harvey Milk?
(Harrisburg) — Yesterday the US Postal Service unveiled its new Forever Stamp honoring homosexual activist Harvey Milk. On August 12, 2009 President Obama awarded a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom to Harvey Milk. The Obama White House continued its celebration of Milk yesterday with the unveiling event. The American Family Association of Pennsylvania (AFA of PA), a statewide traditional values organization, wonders whether the US Postal Service or the White House has done its homework.
“It’s a sad day in the United States of America when a known sexual predator is commemorated with a postage stamp. What heroic actions were Milk involved in that would warrant the issuance of such a stamp? ” questioned Diane Gramley, president of the AFA of PA.
Here are a few Harvey Milk facts:
- Milk lived in San Francisco seven years, ran for public office four times and was finally elected as a city supervisor.
- In naming the onetime camera-shop proprietor one of the 100 most important people of the twentieth century, Time conceded, “As a supervisor, Milk sponsored only two laws—predictably, one barring anti-gay discrimination, and, less so, a law forcing dog owners to clean pets’ messes from sidewalks.”
- He had been in office less than a year when he and Mayor George Moscone were killed by disgruntled former city supervisor, Dan White.
- Milk was also well known for his sexual partners. Milk’s first long-term lover, Joe, had his “introduction to gay life” when he performed sex acts upon men in a movie theatre for money – at age 9. Milk’s next lover, Craig, had been arrested after having sex with a 40-year-old man – when Craig was 14. He met Milk when he was 17. One of his live-in relationships was a pederastic relationship with a 16-year-old boy when Milk was 33.
- Harvey Milk was a huge supporter of Jim Jones. Milk occasionally spoke at Jones’s San Francisco–based headquarters, promoted Jones through his newspaper columns, and defended the Peoples Temple from its growing legion of critics. Jones provided conscripted “volunteers” for Milk’s campaigns to distribute leaflets by the tens of thousands. Nine days prior to Milk’s death, more than 900 followers of Jim Jones — many of them campaign workers for Milk — died by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid.
“Revised history is now saying Milk was killed because of his homosexuality, totally ignoring the fact that his killer, Dan White, hired a homosexual as his campaign manager and voted as a city supervisor to fund a Pride Center for homosexuals. White wasn’t driven to murder by Milk’s vision of gay rights but rather by the petty politics of City Hall. The supporters of rewriting the history of Harvey Milk are simply following in the footsteps of their idol who, though honorably discharged from the Navy, pulled the victim card and told San Francisco voters he had been dishonorably discharged because of his homosexuality. Milk even lied to President Jimmy Carter in his defense of Jim Jones. This man does not deserve our respect, let alone a stamp memorializing his life!” Gramley concluded.
