In God We Trust Faces a Vote TODAY

Details

House Res 13,  as with all resolutions, will not have the force of law, but it is aimed at “supporting and encouraging the public display of the national motto in all public buildings, public schools and other government institutions.”  The Democrats say the Republicans don’t need to do this because there are more important matters at hand.  In a lengthy letter this past March Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee said, “”Instead of addressing any of these critical issues, and instead of working to help American families keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables, we are debating whether or not to affirm and proliferate a motto that was adopted in 1956 and that is not imperiled in any respect.”   The resolution’s sponsor Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), responded, “Federal agencies and departments have been instructed that the phrase not be posted in those buildings.  The effect on our public schools has been chilling, as teachers and administrators do not know whether they can post our national motto on their walls.”  Supporters of the resolution hope it will help turn the tide against what they see as an informal effort to remove references to God from public buildings.  Democrats call the resolution divisive and argue that it violates the prohibition on the government establishment of a religion!

Action Steps

The vote on House Res. 13 is later today. This resolution reaffirming the National Motto may not pass!  Republicans will bring up the measure under a suspension of House rules, which requires a two-thirds majority vote for passage.   Contact your Congressman — here — and ask him or her to vote ‘yes’ on House Resolution 13 to protect the National Motto.
